Предисловие preface

Настоящее учебное пособие предназначено для студентов 2-го курса, обучающихся по российско-американской программе, изучающих дисциплину «Страноведение».

Задания составлены в соответствии с учебным планом и рабочей программой из расчета 36 часов аудиторной работы и 36 часов, предоставленных для самостоятельного изучения материала.

Целью данного пособия является формирование коммуникативной компетенции, навыков поиска и анализа информации, совершенствование страноведческих знаний в сфере экономики, политического устройства стран АТР, а также выработка собственных представлений об актуальных проблемах той или иной страны и поиск путей их решения.

Процессы познания и говорения неразрывно связаны между собой. Поэтому задания учебного пособия предусматривают постепенное накопление информации и предполагаемые пути активизации речевых навыков на ее основе. Все тексты пособия построены на базе оригинальных материалов зарубежных и российских публикаций из различных популярных изданий, представленных в их электронных версиях в сети Интернет.

Учебное пособие состоит из 4 глав, освещающих историко-геогра­фи­че­ские характеристики, аспекты экономического, политического развития, а также сотрудничества с Россией, одних из самых важных промышленно-торговых и индустриальных центров Азиатско-Тихооке­ан­ско­го региона – США, Японии, Китая и Южной Кореи. Уровень сформированности языковых навыков обеспечивают упражнения:

– Vocabulary Study, направленные на активизацию словаря;

– Comprehension Questions, способствующие пониманию текста и контролирующие его;

– Discussion, Role-Play, направленные на совершенствование речевых навыков на основе проработанного материала и умения оперировать полученной информацией.

Контроль знаний, умений и навыков студентов осуществляется в ходе выполнения тестовых заданий и проектных работ по темам данного пособия.

UNIT 1. THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

The United States of America is the fourth largest country in the world, in both size and population. It covers an area of 3,618,465 square miles. The USA is divided into 50 states. Those which border one another on the continent are grouped into 7 regions: New England (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont), Middle Atlantic States (New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania), Southern States (Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia), Midwestern States (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin), Rocky Mountain States (Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming), Southwestern States (Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas) and Pacific Coast States (California, Oregon, Washington). Hawaii and Alaska are grouped separately.

The framework of America is built around a huge interior lowland that has yielded some of the country’s greatest agricultural and mineral wealth. To the east and west, the land rises to mountain ranges that flank the lowland to either side and separate it from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

The mountain ranges differ substantially from each other. The Appalachians on the east stretch are almost unbroken. They are not high and are set back from the Atlantic by a broad belt of coastal lowland.

To the West of the internal basin lies the mighty system of mountains known as the Rocky Mountains. It is part of a global mountain system that encircles the Pacific Basin. Here is no coastal plain. The mountains along the Pacific coast drop abruptly and often spectacularly into the sea.

The Mississippi is one of the world’s great continental rivers. It flows some 3,970 miles from its northern sources in the Rocky Mountains to the Gulf of Mexico, making it one of the world’s longest waterways. The Missouri is its chief western branch. It pours into the Mississippi from the west, the Ohio – from the east. For miles, the waters of the two rivers flow on side by side, without mixing.

Like the Mississippi, all the rivers east of the Rockies finally reach the Atlantic; all the waters to the west ultimately flow into the Pacific. The line that divides these rivers is called the Continental Divide.

The two great rivers of the Pacific side are the Colorado in the south, and the Columbia, which originates in Canada and drains the north.

The Rio Grande, about 1,990 long, is the foremost river of the Southwest. It forms a natural boundary between Mexico and the United States.

North of the Central Lowland, extending for almost 994 miles, are the five Great Lakes (Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, Lake Huron, Lake Superior) which the United States shares with Canada.

The United States is the fourth country in the world in terms of population. There are more than 245 mln inhabitants. 77 % of the population lives in urban areas; 23 % – in rural areas. The people of the United States represents cultures from around the world. There are many ethnic groups. The largest minority group consists of Afro-Americans who make up about 12 % of the population. Spanish-speaking people from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba and other Hispanic countries form another group which equals 6 % of the population. Native Americans are less than one half of one percent of the total. Minorities of Asian descent include Chinese, Japanese, Indochinese and others.
