Глагол TO BE
Глагол to be употребляется в качестве смыслового глагола, глагола-связки в составном именном сказуемом и вспомогательного глагола. В роли смыслового глагола to be соответствует в русском языке глаголам «быть», «находиться». В этом случае в настоящем времени to be на русский язык часто не переводится.
I. DECLARATIVE SENTENCE
am ... . I am a student.
,, is ... . He is clever.
are ... . They are friends.
II. INTERROGATIVE SENTENCE
Am ...? Am I a student?
Is ,, ...? Is he clever?
Are ...? Are they friends?
III. NEGATIVE SENTENCE
am not ... . I am not a student.
,, is not ... . He is not clever.
are not ... . They are not friends.
Также в предложениях употребляются сокращенные формы глагола to be:
I am = I'm
He is = He's
They are = They're
He is not = He isn't
We are not = We aren't
Как самостоятельный глагол to be употребляется для обозначений возраста людей, размеров предметов, цены товаров, времени, погоды, характеристики людей.
