EDUCATION OUR UNIVERSITY

I'm a student of the Orel State Agricultural University. After finishing the secondary school I made up my mind to enter the high school because 1 would like to be a highly qualified specialist in the sphere of servicing and maintenance of agricultural machines.

Our University was founded in 1975. It was not very large. At first it was the Orel Agricultural Institute. There were only 3 faculties: the Zootechnical Faculty, the Agronomy Faculty, and the Farm Mechanization Faculty. But later on the field of student education was extended. In 1995 the Agricultural Institute was renamed into the Academy. In 1999 the Academy was rewarded the status of a university. Today our University offers a great variety of profession lines. In the University there are the following faculties: the Agronomy Faculty, the Economy Faculty, the Engineering Faculty, the Zooengineering Faculty. More than that some of these faculties train students in several fields, for example: the Zooengineering Faculty has the Zootechnical, the Meat and Milk Processing Technologies, the Applied Biotechnologies and the Veterinary Departments; the Engineering Faculty offers the Farm Mechanization Department, the Civil Construction Department, the Landscape Department, the Servicing and Maintenance of Agricultural Machines Department, the Electrification and Automatisation of Agriculture; the Economy Faculty carries an educational program on the Accounting and Auditing Department, the Finance and Credit Department, the Enterprise Management Department.

The students can study at a full time course, or take an extramural course. Our university has no evening course.

The freshers study some general subjects. They broaden and deepen their knowledge in Mathematics, Physics, History, Economics, Biology and Zoology, Philosophy, Technical Drawing, Computers, Foreign Languages and others. Later on the students study some special subjects, which will be necessary for them in the future profession; for example the Engineering Faculty students study Agricultural Machines and Tractors. Reliability and Repair of Cars and Tractors, Material Resistance, Soiling Technology; the students of Zooengineering Faculty study Zoology and Microbiology, Surgery, Breeding and Feeding; the students of Economical Faculty study the Laws of Statistics, Accounting, Management .The academic year is divided into 2 terms, at the end of each term the students have winter and summer vocations. The student knowledge is controlled during the course of study by practical courses and works, seminars, wide test systems; at the end of each term the students take the examinations. In the course of study the students write control papers, tests, graduation works, essays and at the end of the course of study they receive a diploma with the qualification.

Some of the diligent and industrious student can take a degree, so they can continue their education entering postgraduate courses.

The University has various facilities to provide education: such as laboratories with modern equipment, large computing classes; we can find a restful and well-stocked library with areas for individual study as well as trained librarians to offer help and support The university provides good lodging conditions - the student residence is very conveniently located not far from the University.

The majority of the students receive a grant. The students are involved into social life of the University: sporting halls and grounds, conferences, sporting events and parties, amateur groups, concerts are at their disposal.

Our University includes the students into the World Program TASIC to provide realistic training environment for the study.

THE HERMITAGE

One of the world-wide known museums is the Hermitage. The word « Hermitage* means « a place of solitude ». This name was given in the XVIII century by Catherine II to her private museum housed in a small building adjacent to the Winter Palace and accessible only to the chosen few.

In the course of time, the Hermitage grew into one of the greatest museums of the world. At the present, the collections take up five interconnected buildings. The museum retains its old name.

The accumulation of artifacts let to the formation of new departments devoted to the culture and art of the Peoples of the East, of the Prehistoric culture, and of the Russian culture. Three other departments are those of Western European art, classical antiquities and numismatics.

One of the rooms that impressed visitor the most is St. George Hall. The interior of the room is considered by experts to be a perfect example of the Classical Style. The room covers about 800 square metres, but does not seem enormous due to perfect proportions. It is decorated in the whitest marble and gilded bronze.

The Throne Hall was used for column assemblies. Members of the Tzar's family, when coming of age, took their oaths here.

The Leonardo da Vinci Hall is one of the most gorgeous interiors. The hall is decorated in the style of 17 century French

Baroque. The Hermitage possesses two, out of 12 or 14 works surviving from Leonardo.

The Rembrandt collection is one of the most treasured possessions of the museum. It numbers 24 canvases.

The Malachite Room reflects the style of 1839. The co-lumns, pilasters, and floorlamps are veneered with thin plaques of rich green malachite. About two tons of malachite were ased in decoration of the room.
