Forestry

Forestry is the art of establishing, managing and utilizing woodlands. It deals with wooded areas of every size, age and condition of growth. Whether woodlands are grown for a supply of timber or other useful products, for the encouragement of wild life, for the prevention of soil erosion or for recreational benefits, it is only through the application of forestry that effective results will be obtained.

Forestry may start with bare soil on which a new crop of trees is to be established; it may begin with forests that contain large amounts of mature timber, or it may start with tree growth in an intermediate condition of age and size.

The art of forestry is built upon a foundation of biological science, economics and engineering. Trees are growing plants, and it is essential that their growth processes and environmental relationships be understood. Because forestry and wild-life management are so closely interrelated, the field of zoology is also an important part of the forester’s field of knowledge. Economic considerations determine the practicable extent to which the application of forestry is possible.

With such a background the various steps may be taken in order to establish and maintain productive forest growth.

Silviculture

The majority of woods are in need of attention. In the ideal wood trees should be spaced with reasonable uniformity and should be of varied sizes and kinds. Crowns should be normal in shape and size.

Where the woods are stocked with healthy specimens of the more desirable species of regional occurrence, the maximum production of wood will take place. To build up a woodland is not a simple task. Trees grow slowly. The poorer the condition of the woods at the start, the longer the period required to reach the goal. But improvement is possible through the proper method of treatment. This method is termed silviculture.

Silviculture is the art of reproducing and tending forest growth. It includes the technique of starting new forests and caring for them through all stages to maturity. Regeneration of woods may be accomplished by creating conditions for establishing new stands either by natural seeding or by new crop of tree sprouts. New woodlands may also be established by planting small trees grown in forest nurseries.

The application of silvicultural treatment demands a knowledge of many environmental factors that influence the growth of various species, an understanding of the ways in which trees live and grow in association with each other, and an appreciation of the growth of the individual species that are adaptable to local conditions.
