Must

The modal verb must has only one form for the present tense. The negative form is must not( mustn 't).

All the other tenses are expressed Ьу have to. Mustfollowed bythe Present lnfinitive mayexpress: 1 • Obligation or necessity

Pupils must оЬеу their teachers.

Obligations expressed Ьу must refer to the present or future but in repoгted speech they may refer to the past:

She said she must invite her friend to dinner.

lf we want to say that there is no necessity to do something, we use пееdп't. The verb пееd expresses necessity but is mostly used in the negativf! sentences:

You пееdп't wait for him. You тау riпg him up.

2.Must + поt expresses prohibition:

Pupils must not prompt each other.

3.Must expresses supposition in affirmative sentences. Then it is equivalent to

рrоЬаЬ/у, evideпtly.

ln this case it is translated into Russian as: должно быть, вероятно, очевидно

Nick must Ье at home now. Ring him up.

То give the idea ofthe present moment, the Continuous lnfinitive is LJsed aftc:~ must:

Where is Lena?- ln the library; she must Ье workiпg оп her report. lfwe speak about the past, we use the Perfect lnfinitive after must.

You must have broken the telephoпe. lt is out of order.

lf you speak about the future must expressing supposition is not used. W1 · use another expression to Ье likely:

Не is Jike/y to соте оп Sunday.

Must expressing supposition is not used in negative sentences. There are several ways of expressing the negative meaning:

You must have misuпderstood те.

They must have Ьееп iпatteпtive.

You must have failed to recogпize you. You must have had по сhапсе to warn you. The letter must have пeverreached them.

The letter must have Ьееп left uпaпswered. No опе must have sееп him there.

Не must Ье quite uпaware ofthe circumstaпces.

And of course instead of the modal verb the adverbs рrоЬаЬ/уand evideпtly are used.

Evideпtly, she did поtmeet him before.

РrоЬаЬ/у, she did поtrecogпize him.

4.Emphasis. ln this case must is not translated into Russian, it merely emphasizes some action or idea:

Just wheп we were ready to go away for the holidays, the ЬаЬу must

catch meas!es. - Как раз когда мы ужеуезжали в отпуск, ребенок вдруг заболел корью.( ... возьми да и заболей ... ).

Of course after 1gave her туadvice she must go апd do the opposites.
