2.1 Kinds of Sentences according to the Purpose of Utterance

1. Define the kinds of the following sentences according to the purpose of utterance:

  1. Large drops of rain warned the travelers of the rapid approach of a stormy night.

  2. H as he finished his work?

  3. Open your books, please.

  4. A delegation of foreign students has visited our University.

  5. What are you translating? – A newspaper article.

  6. Let’s go for a walk now.

2. Ask all kinds of questions to the following sentences:

  2. Бібліотека відкрита зараз, чи не так? – Ні, вона закрита.

  5. Вони ж не чекають нас зараз, чи не так? – Ні, вони чекають нас.

  6. Ти ж не вмієш грати в теніс, чи не так? – Так, не вмію. – Ні, я вмію.

  7. Він був хворий вчора, чи не так? – Так, він був хворий. – Ні, він не був хворий.

  8. Ти ж ніколи не був там, чи не так? – Так, не був. – Ні, я вже був там.

5. Form exclamatory sentences:

Model: The task is difficult. – How difficult the task is!

He is a bright student. – What a bright student he is!

  1. We had a long active day.

  2. She read fluently.

  3. He has made good progress in his studies.

  4. Peter looks healthy after his vacation.

  5. He is a skilled worker.

  6. I have very clever students.

  7. It is freezing hard.

  8. He gave me good advice.

  9. It was a clear cold winter day.

  10. The storm is approaching quickly.

6. Define the types of the following sentences according to their structure:

  1. Our friendship was forged in the fire of war.

  2. A summer night, just dark and very warm.
