Chapter 11

  1. Translate from Russian into English using expressions from the text:

  1. Вся эта история - полный абсурд.

  1. Make a detailed plan of an accident which happened to George one winter morning.

  2. Relate this story as it might be told by Mrs Gippings.

  3. Compose a dialogue btw two policemen sharing their opinions on George.

5. Recollect the intentions of three men to have a morning swim (chapter 3) and tell how they were put into practice.

6. Speak about George and his shirt. Think about a moral of the story.

7. Tell the story about scrambled eggs. Have you ever found yourself in a situation like that?

8. A passage for reading and translation: from "The sun had got more powerful..." up to the end of the description.

9. What historical event is described by the author? Give some more information about it. Write out of the passage all the words denoting the participants of the scene. Translate them into Russian and use in a short account of the scene.

Chapter 12

1. Find Russian equivalents of the following word-combinations. Recollect the situations in which they appear in the chapter:

2. Translate the following word-combinations into English and recollect the situations in which they appear in the text. Use them in the sentences of your own:

3. Answer the questions:

  5. Who helped them in a trying situation?

  1. Why do people make extravagant offers in moment of excitement and how do they usually behave later?

  2. What was the reaction of three old gentlemen after they found themselves at the bottom of their boat?

4. Compose a dialogue btw Emily and John Edward discussing the "awful behavior" of John's friend.

5. Describe the Saturday before the August Bank Holiday as if you were a small boy or his mother. Give some information on Bank Holiday in general.

6. Speak about the accident with the tin of pine-apples.

7. A passage for reading and translation: from "There is no more thrilling..." up to "Harris let the sail down..."
