Environmental problems in 2014 - What will have to change?

The year 2012 cannot be described as the good year for global ecology because _1_ still continue to grow, not only in number but also in size, pushing this world one step closer to an environmental disaster of gigantic proportions.

Will year 2014 make any difference in this sense? Highly unlikely. The grim economic outlook will receive all the attention from world leaders once again while environmental problems will continue to wait for better times. Environment still continues to be in the shadows of economy.

This situation is an excellent symbol of our entire _2_ in which everything is judged primarily by money and material goods while everything else seems to be of very little _3_. Environmental condition of our entire planet is constantly deteriorating and yet this doesn't seem to worry world too much – it is like we purposely ignore environmental issues not giving them the importance they most certainly deserve. Global politics and environmental protection don't go along.

Climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss, ocean _4_, deforestation - all these issues are far more serious than most of the world thinks they are. In business as usual scenario these issues will negatively _5_the well-being of our future _6_,meaning that our children and grandchildren will have to pay for our mistakes. In order to improve the environmental condition of our planet we first need to change our perception by setting the right _7_.

Second, the world needs to unite because environmental issues have become global so only a joint effort can have positive _8_. But what about global politics? Will politicians be able to sacrifice individual interests in order to make this world a better _9_ to live in?

Judging by the past experiences the answer is no. As long as politics and petty individual interests continue to rule the world we won't see any change for better. This means nothing more than few false political promises every now and then and environmental issues being lost in the abyss of greed and _10_.

До недавнего времени планета была большим миром, в котором деятельность человека и природы были в равновесии. Кислотные дожди, глобальное потепление, сокращение озонового слоя, широко распространенное опустынивание и потеря видов: вот чему мы должны противостоять сейчас.

Экология и экономика очень тесно связаны. Сначала экономика влияла на состояние окружающей среды. Теперь нам приходится сталкиваться с деградацией почв, воды, атмосферы и лесов. Миллионами умирают деревья в Шварцвальд в Германии и тысячи озер в Швеции стали настолько кислыми, что ничто не может жить в них. В Шотландии фермеры жалуются, что кислотные дожди убивают рыбу. Леса в Дании, Франции, Северной Италии, Греции и Норвегии повреждены.

Тысячи озер в Канаде и США больше не могут поддерживать жизнь рыб. Средиземное море является одним из самых грязных в мире. Десять миллионов тонн нефти, промышленные отходы, химические вещества поступают в море  каждый год. Это приводит к таким болезням, как брюшной тиф, дизентерия, гепатит и холера.

Многие отрасли промышленности производят отходы, которые могут быть тяжелыми и вредными при использовании. Многие страны не имеют помещений для хранения отработанного ядерного топлива. Поиск путей хранения радиоактивных отходов продолжается. В 1982 году 17 стран приняли участие в экологической программе Организации Объединенных Наций. Всемирная комиссия по окружающей среде и развитию, возглавляемая премьер-министром Норвегии, была создана в 1983 году Организацией Объединенных Наций. Её цель заключалась в изучении окружающей среды и проблем развития на планете, и формулировке реальных предложений по их решению.

Теперь некоторые химикаты будут запрещены, а некоторые должны находиться под контролем. В ряде стран проводятся частые анализы воды вокруг побережья. Настало время для правительств и народа взять на себя ответственность за политику, которая может причинить вред окружающей среде.
