IV. Герундиальная конструкция
Подобно всем неличным формам, герундий может образовывать предикативные конструкции, в которых вербальный элемент, выраженный герундием, находится в предикатных отношениях с номинативным элементом, выраженным существительным или местоимением..
Если номинативный элемент - одушевленное существительное, то он может быть выражен:
1. существительным в родительном падеже или притяжательным местоимением
Do you mind my attending your class?
Вы ничего не имеете против того, что я буду посещать ваше занятие?
I was shocked by Jack’s speaking in such a tone.
Я был поражен тем, что Джек разговаривал таким тоном.
существительным в общем падеже
I object to my daughter dating with you.
Я против того, чтобы моя дочь встречалась с вами.
Если номинативный элемент конструкции - неодушевленное существительное, то используется общий падеж или притяжательное местоимение.
She explained her delay of the watch being slow.
Она объяснила свое опоздание тем, что ее часы отстают.
Номинативный элемент может быть выражен такими местоимениями как “all, this, that, both, each, something”.
I insist on both of them being responsible for the mistake.
Я настаиваю на том, чтобы они оба отвечали за эту ошибку.
The mother was conscious of something wrong happening with her son.
Мама почувствовала, что с ее сыном что-то происходит.
V. Использование герундия
Герундий широко используется в современном английском языке. Поскольку герундий и инфинитив обладают одинаковыми грамматическими признаками (вербальными и номинативными) и выполняют в предложении одни и те же функции, их можно считать синтаксическими синонимами. Довольно часто эти грамматические формы заменяют друг друга в предложении. Однако, существую случаи, когда может использоваться только герундий.
1. Со следующими глаголами и глагольными словосочетаниями: to avoid, to burst out, to deny, to enjoy, to excuse, to fancy, to forgive, to finish, to give up, to go on, to keep (on), to leave off, to mind, to postpone, to put off, cannot help и некоторых других.
She avoided looking at him.
The child burst out laughing.
They went on playing chess.
Excuse my leaving so early.
Do you mind my asking such a question.
She couldn’t help crying.
2. Со следующими глаголами и глагольными словосочетаниями с предлогом: to accuse of, to agree to, to approve of, to complain of, to depend on, to feel like, to insist on, to look like, to object to, to prevent from, to succeed in, to look forward to, to relay on, to thank for и некоторых других.
We agreed to his coming to our party.
She didn’t feel like seeing him.
I insist on being met at the station.
We thank you for helping us.
3. Со следующими предикативными словосочетаниями (с и без предлога): to be aware of, to busy in, to be capable of, to be fond of, to be guilty of, to be pleased at, to be worth и некоторыми другими.
She is fond of going to the theatre.
I am not aware of his being married.
He is capable of speaking to different people.
This film is worth seeing.
Примечание:
1. С глаголом “to remember” герундий соотносит действие с прошлым, инфинитив - с будущим.
I remember discussing the problem with him.
Я помню, что обсуждал эту проблему с ним.
Remember to come in time.
Не забудьте придти вовремя.
2. С глаголом “to stop” герундий и инфинитив имеют различные значения.
We stopped to have a rest.
Мы остановились, чтобы отдохнуть.
We stopped argueing.
Мы прекратили спорить.
3. Поскольку герундий совпадает по форме с отглагольным существительным, следует помнить о существующих отличительных признаках:
а) отглагольное существительное, как правило, используется с артиклем.
The building was a very old one. (verbal noun)
We didn’t like his idea of building a new house.(gerund)
б) Герундий не имеет формы множественного числа.
Their meetings were very frequent. (verbal noun)
в) Герундий, образованный от переходных глаголов, используется с прямым дополнением; в то время как отглагольное существительное с предложным предлогом “of”.
I don’t feel like reading the paper. (gerund)
The reading of paper was boring. (verbal noun)
г) Герундий может определяться наречием, отглагольное существительное - прилагательным.
Speaking loudly is a bad habit. (gerund)
We had an interesting meeting. (verbal noun)
