Named in honour of yuriy kondratyuk

Poltava National Technical University named in honour of Yuriy Kondratyuk is an acknowledged educational and scientific centre for carrying out research and training specialists in technical-engineering, building, economic, ecological, architectur-al and artistic spheres. Fifty educational institutions of different levels (secondary schools, gymnasiums, lyceums, vocational schools, technical schools, colleges) are affiliated with the university.

Its primary aim is to train specialists of higher technical education for the enterprises, institutions, and organizations of different property forms. Our specialists are able to secure the effective engineering, financial, and economic activities of the enterprises, institutions, and organizations as well as their adaptation to the transient market conditions of the modern production process.

For 72 years, over 35,000 highly-qualified specialists have been trained by the scientific and pedagogical staff of this establishment. At present the student body amounts to 7,000 pеоplе, among them full-time and part-time undergraduates, postgraduates (or postgraduate students) and doctoral students. They are trained in 30 specialities and specializations. Moreover, annually 20 out of 35 chairs of the university train over 70 postgraduates in 18 specialities. The numerous teaching staff engaged in the academic, research, and educational activities comprises 346 members, including three State Prize Winners of Ukraine in the branch of knowledge and engineering, five Honoured Cultural and Educational Workers of Ukraine, three Honoured Artists of Ukraine, 15 academicians and Corresponding members of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. More than 80 % of teachers have scientific degrees and academic ranks.

The university is made up of seven faculties. They are: the faculty of economics, architecture, civil-engineering, electro-mechanics, sanitary-engineering, extra-mural, and the faculty of Pre-university and Post qualification education. The complete university course lasts 5 years.

This university is the oldest educational institution of higher learning in our town. It has a glorious history and traditions of training highly skilled specialists. The principal building of the university is an architectural monument of the early XIX century built in the Empire style for the Institute of Noble Maids in 1828 --1832. On 18 August, 1930, the only institute of agricultural engineering in the country was founded in this building, which was renamed the Poltava Civil Engineering Institute in 1961. In June, 1994, our educational institution was licensed at the fourth (the highest) level of accreditation with the status of the Technical University which was conferred on it. On the occasion of the centenary of Yuriy Kondratyuk's birth, on 21 June, 1997, his name was conferred on our university. In 1910 Yuriy Kondratyuk became a third-year student at this establishment and successfully graduated from it with a silver medal in 1916. He is considered to be one of the founders of the theory of astronautics, and his ideas and inventions are used for developing space research. Having taken into consideration the outstanding achievements in academic and educational activities, Ukraine's President Leonid Kuchma granted the Technical University of Poltava with the status of "National" on 27 March, 2002.

The edifice of the Poltava National Technical University іs locatеd close to the town centre facing a picturesque park. From a distance the university іs іdentіfіеd by a 9-storeyed residence block which contrasts with the rest of the mainly low-lying buildings. The campus is set іn 80,000 sq.m (17 sq.m. per one student). At the heart of it іs the central administration building, called the Unіversіty House. PNTU is housed in nine buildings, including five dormitories for 2,200 undergraduates and postgraduates and a university canteen where as many as 500 people can sit. There is a dispensary health resort nearby.

Our students and teachers have all facilities at their disposal free of charge: 55 educational and 10 research laboratories, equipped with up-to-date devices, instruments, installations, and tools; 12 computer centres comprise more than 300 personal computers; 4 large reading halls with 280 reader places. The university library has a very rich depository (over 500,000 items). Great importance is attached to the development of physical culture. There are four gymnasiums and a stadium with some sports grounds, football pitches, volley-ball and basketball courts. There is also the sports camp "Vorskla" on the picturesque bank of the river in the pinery near Poltava. Every summer over 200 students can improve their health there.
