Present Status of Research

Brief Description of Research

Experimental models have been developed and tested of the high-power protective circuit breakers and make switches that can operate with continuous currents of up to 60 kA, and at a voltage of 20 kV. The advantage of this unique equipment rests in the possibility of operating it quickly with large, steady-state currents of up to 60 kA. Such equipment is not available elsewhere in the world market. Moreover, it may be used in Power Supplies at different electrophysical and industrial installations (i.e. controlled fusion applications).

Legal Aspects

Results of the investigation of the protective switching equipment have been presented in a number of international conferences. Patent applications for some of this equipment have been approved in Russia.

Special Facilities

Some special facilities at the Efremov Institute have been used during the testing and investigation of the protective switching equipment, including: a 40 MJ homopolar generator that can produce pulsed currents of up to 1 MA with a duration of several seconds or more; a 5 MJ inductive energy storage with a rated current of 100 kA; a 2 MJ capacitor energy storage to generate large pulsed currents.
