В: What were you doing at the time ?

A: I was queueing for the cinema.

С: And what did you do when you saw the accident ?

A: I rushed forward to see if I could help.

Work in threes. Have similar conversations, beginning with these remarks:

      1. I broke a tooth this morning.

      2. I got cramp in my leg yesterday afternoon.

      3. The au pair girl broke two glasses yesterday.

      4. We were chased by a bull last week.

      5. Jack cut his face this morning.

      6. She lost the top of her bikini yesterday afternoon.

Report your answers to the rest of the class.

Example I was queueing for the cinema yesterday when I saw a car accident, so I rushed forward to see if I could help.

12.3 Headline news

Practice

Look at the newspaper headlines below, and explain what they mean.

Example

An express train was derailed while it was travelling at 90 miles per hour.

Writing

Choose one of the headlines and develop it into a paragraph. Add any details you like, and add at least one more event.

Example An express train was travelling at 90 m.p.h. on the main line from London to Manchester last night when it was derailed by a tree which was lying on the line. Fortunately, no-one was killed, although 30 passengers were taken to hospital suffering from minor injuries.

12.4 Experiences

Free practice

You will hear two people talking about experiences they have had. Listen to the tape and answer the questions.

        1. What is the man’s story ?

        2. What is the woman’s story ?

Work in groups. Have similar conversations, talking about experiences that you have had. Begin by asking each other these questions:

1. Have you ever been chased by a dog? 3. Have you ever been stopped by a policeman ?

2. Have you ever lost all your money ? 4. Have you ever been in a dangerous situation ?

Writing

Choose one of the stories that you told or heard. Write a paragraph telling the story of what happened.

12.5 Evidence of the senses Presentation

Look at these examples.

A Through my binoculars I could see the girl across the street sunbathing on her balcony. But she noticed me looking at her. Then I saw her blush, pick up her magazine, and go indoors.

В Last night as I was going to bed I could hear the neighbours shouting and throwing crockery at each other. Then, a few moments later, I heard a door slam, and everything went quiet.

С ‘Now you say someone took your wallet out of the back pocket of your trousers while you were standing in the bus queue. Are you sure it didn’t just fall out ?’ ‘No, I’m quite sure -1 actually felt someone take it out of my pocket.’ ‘And when you turned round, there was a young man running away down the street. Is that correct?’ ‘Yes, I saw him running away.’ ‘And did anyone else see all this happen ?’

What is the difference between:

see/hear/feel someone do something

and

see/hear/feel someone doing something?

Put the verbs in brackets into the correct form.

1. I could see a man (sit) on the balcony and (read) a newspaper. Then I saw him (get) up and (go) indoors.

2. I turned round and saw a snake slowly (slither) towards me.

3. I could hear a car (come) fast along the main road. I heard the driver (brake) hard.

4. I thought I heard someone (break) a window in the next room.

5 . I heard the bomb (explode), and felt the whole building (shake).
