Ethics of pr

'Ethics is good economies'. This is not a cynical phrase but means 'it pays to be honest'. A business is more likely to succeed if it is trusted. In PR, credibility is vital. Not only must it be believable but it must be true. PR is about knowledge and understanding and that leads to goodwill, which depends on faith.

One can also say that 'honesty is the best policy'. That means that PR will not work if it is not believed. This is different from propaganda, when people must believe in a certain political idea. In PR we are responsible for distribution of factual information, accurately and without comment.

Ethics is also about the ways PR specialists behave. Public relations specialists have to do PR for themselves. PR people give expert advice and they do not bribe journalists.

If employers ask PR specialists to do something unethical they should use their professional code of ethics as an argument achieve good Press Relations

How to achieve good press relations

Among principles how to achieve good press relations are:

  • By helping the media PR practitioner will be able to cooperate with the media. He or she will create a two-way relationship.

  • By establishing a reputation for reliability. Accurate material should be supplied where and when it is wanted.

  • By supplying good copy. For instance, supplying good properly captioned interesting pictures.

  • By cooperation in providing material. For example, arranging press interviews with management when requested.

  • By providing information. For example, allowing journalists to see things for themselves.

  • By establishing personal relationships with the media. These should be based on frankness and mutual professional respect.

The last point deserves a little discussion. It has to be acknowledged that the PR specialist and the journalist have different, and sometimes contradictory jobs.

The PR practitioner's first responsibility is to the client or employer, if this does not contradict professional ethics, the law and the public interest. The PR practitioner's job is to carry out the agreed PR programmes.

The journalist's first responsibility is to the publisher, whose policy he or she must follow. It can be that what readers want to read and listeners want to hear and viewers want to watch is not what the PR practitioner wants to publish or broadcast.

How News is gathered

The methods by which news, features stories, pictures and other editorial materials are gathered may be the following:

Reporters. These are journalists who are directed by the editor to seek information on a topic. Some may specialize in, for example, crime, politics or sports

  • Special correspondents. These are writers who specialize in subjects such as industry, science, education and so on. There are also war correspondents and foreign correspondents.

  • Stringers. Newspapers cannot afford to have their own reporters in every town, and so they have contacts with local journalists to cover stories for them.

  • Foreign correspondents. Large newspapers usually have foreign correspondents in the main cities of the world.

  • Feature writers. Usually these are journalists who write articles rather than news reports, giving in-depth background to the news or specializing in topics such as politics or fashion.

  • Wire services. A wire service is a central news service which receives, edits and transmits news to news rooms. This service is now computerized.

  • News agencies. These are also firms which specialize in certain topics and sell news to the media.

  • Picture agencies and picture libraries. Important news events are photographed by picture agency photographers who send pictures to editors.

  • PR sources. Editors rely on PR specialists for news, interviews and ideas for articles or written articles.

Australia, officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a country in the Southern Hemisphere comprising the mainland of the Australian continent as well as the island of Tasmania and numerous smaller islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans

Australia's landmass of 7, 5 millions square. Surrounded by the Indian and Pacific oceans, it is separated from Asia by the Arafura and Timor seas, with the Coral Sea lying off the Queensland coast, and the Tasman Sea lying between Australia and New Zealand. Australia has 34 000 kilometers of coastline.

Pronounced in Australian English, the name Australia is derived from the Latin australis, meaning "southern". Although Australia has no official language, English is so entrenched that it has become the de facto national language. Australian English is a major variety of the language with a distinctive accent and lexicon.

The climate of Australia is significantly influenced by ocean currents, including the Indian Ocean which is correlated with periodic drought, and the seasonal tropical low pressure system that produces cyclones in northern Australia. These factors induce rainfall to vary markedly from year to year. Much of the northern part of the country has a tropical predominantly summer rainfall climate. The southwest corner of the country has a Mediterranean climate.

The population of Australia was 19millions as of July 2000, with a population density of about 6people per square mile. Most of the population is concentrated along the southeast coast of the country, in an arc running from the city of Brisbane to the city of Adelaide. All of Australia's large cities those with more than 1 million people—Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide—are on the coast. Australia's population is mostly urbanized, with about 88 percent of its people living in an urban area. Sydney alone has over 20 percent of the country's people. The country's population is expected to reach 21 million by 2010. Hervey Bay is a city in Queensland, Australia.. The local economy relies on tourism, for which whale watching, Fraser Island and Lady Elliot Island and Hervey Bay's calm beaches are the major draw cards. In 2008, Hervey Bay was the fastest growing statistical division in the country. Hervey Bay began as a dispersed community spread over numerous small, seaside villages.
