The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and London

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland occupies the Island of Great Britain, the northern part of the Island of Ireland and a number of small islands.

London is the capital of England. England is bigger than the other parts of the UK. The population of England is 60 million people.

The capital of Wales is Cardiff.

The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh.

London is political, economic and cultural center of Great Britain. London is an ancient city. It is more than 20 centuries old. The population of London is more than 9 million people. London is one of the biggest cities in the world and the largest city in Europe. It is situated on the banks of the river Thames.

London includes several parts: the City, Westminster, the West End and the East End.

The City is the financial and business center. There are a lot of banks and offices there. One of the greatest English churches — St. Paul's Cathedral — is situated here. It was designed and built in 1710. St. Paul's Cathedral is the second large church in Europe.

Westminster is the administrative center of London. The Houses of Parliament are situated here. It is the seat of the British Government. The building is very beautiful with its two towers and a big clock called Big Ben. Westminster Abbey was built in the 11th century. Many famous people are buried here: Newton, Darwin, Dickens and Kipling.

The West End is the part of London where the rich people live. There are the best cinemas, theatres, concert halls, famous shops, comfortable hotels, restaurants, museums in this part of the city. The most beautiful park of London — Hyde Park — is in this district too.

The East End includes the port, the docks and the great industrial areas.

The Tower was built by William the Conqueror who conquered England in 1066. The Tower of London has been “fortress, palace, home of the Crown Jewels and national treasures, arsenal, mint, prison, observatory, zoo and tourist attraction”, wrote the Duke of Edinburgh in a book celebrating the Tower’s 900th anniversary. It is interesting to mention the tradition connected with the history of Tower. The royal menagerie departed to the Zoo in 1834, leaving only the ravens behind. Tradition says that if the ravens leave, the Tower and the country will fall. So Beefeaters – Warders of the Tower - give ravens meat every night.
