This seminar will enable students:

• to engage in the analysis of the internal structure of English words using various methodological tools;

• to extend their knowledge of the word-forming means in Modern English as well as learn how to apply the acquired knowledge in the process of English teaching.

Practical Tasks

Task 1. Give the definition to the linguistic terms given below. Transcribe the terms:

morphology, morphemic analysis, derivational analysis, a simple word, a derived word, a compound word, a pseudo-compound, a morpheme, an allomorph, a pseudo-morpheme, a stem, a root, an affix, an affixoid, a word family, a derivational affix, an inflection, word-formation, affixation, conversion, word-composition, abbreviation, acronym, apocope, syncope, aphaeresis, fore-and-aft clipping, blending, lexicalization of syntactical units, back-formation, onomatopoeia, stress-interchange, sound-interchange.

Task 2. Use the word in italic capitals to form a word that fits in the spaces. Carry out the morphemic analysis of the words you form. Use tree diagrams for representing their structure.
