1. Hong Kong International airport is built on the land taken from the sea. It has only one runway which provides take-off and landing in two directions. The length of the runway is 3390 meters. The runway is connected with the main taxiway by the high speed taxi ways. A number of connecting taxiways provide link between the runway, apron or maintenance and cargo areas. The airport is equipped with modem radio and navigation systems which provide the efficiency of air traffic control.

2. Bogota Eldorado is the principal aerodrome in Columbia for international flight operations. Jose Maria Cordova ranks second in size and traffic to Bogota. The airport provides 24 hour service and is designed to accommodate all current types of aircraft. The airport terminal building is designed to facilitate safe and economic transfer of passengers and cargo between aircraft and ground transport. The building is of semicircular shape with two independent levels: the first for arrivals, the second for departures.

3. Kansai Airport was constructed on a 511-hectare artificial island created in the Bay of Osaka. The official reason for the island site is the fact it reduced the noise problem and environmental damage and allows round-the-clock operations. 'The airport, located 5 km offshore, is equipped with one 3.5000-metre runway which is able to handle a maximum of 160.000 flights a year predicated on 24-hour operation. These figures indicate a handling capacity of 25 million passengers per year.

1. Baltimore/Washington International Airport is strategically located at the- heart of the Washington-Baltimore consolidated area - the fourth largest market in the United States with 6.7 million people. The area's excellent network of highways and rail service allows BWI to draw travellers from a very broad area, including Maryland, Washington, D.C. Southern Pennsylvania, Delaware, Northern Virginia and West Virginia. This area gives BWI access to a total market of more than eight million.

On the steeper approach, aircraft noise is at a higher altitude than would be with a conventional 3-degree approach. The resulting decrease of the area affected by noise is considerable. The steep approach path angle is one important lequirement to be met by aircraft operating into London City Airport No less important is the capability to meet the requirements for take­off from the airport's relatively short runway.
