Bruins come up empty at MSG

Rangers win on Gaborik goal

By Stephen Harris Monday, November 2, 2009

Boston Herald Sports Reporter

NEW YORK - The Bruins [team stats] remain stuck in their season-long rut of perfect mediocrity. Win one, lose one.

The pattern continued yesterday at Madison Square Garden, where the B’s were again unable to grab a second successive victory, dropping a 1-0 decision to Henrik Lundqvist and the Rangers.

“We’re certainly reminded of that quite a bit,” coach Claude Julien said of the win-one/lose-one trend. “And we’re certainly aware of it as well.”

So there was no shortage of frustration after the Bruins gave another strong two-way effort. It was the sort of performance which, had a couple of pucks found their way behind Lundqvist (29 saves), would have been deemed excellent.

“I’m certainly not going to complain about our effort,” Julien said. “We did everything, except right now we’re not scoring goals. Our top-end guys have got to find a way to start scoring some goals. Until that happens we’re going to be dealing with these types of games.

“It becomes frustrating for everybody, but the effort was good. This is a tough building to come in and I thought we handled everything well. It’s just unfortunate we weren’t able to score.”

Because of that failure, it took only one somewhat fluky goal to decide the contest.

At 15:51 of the second period, the Rangers Vinny Prospal dished a little pass from the left wing boards into the left slot. From there, Marian Gaborik swung a one-timer toward B’s goalie Tim Thomas [stats], who was partially screened by defenseman Zdeno Chara. Gaborik’s flubbed shot tumbled past the late-reacting Thomas high on the glove side.

“I didn’t see the shot released,” Thomas said. “I caught it maybe 8 feet out, saw it fluttering out in my peripheral vision. There was a crowd. Everybody was trying to play good (defense). I didn’t pick it up until a little bit later. We were actually in pretty good defensive position.

“It was kind of a lucky shot, as far as he fanned on it and it went up. I’m not even sure he could have put it where it ended up if he got off a straight shot. I think (the B’s Blake) Wheeler was in the way.”

That was it for offense in a game in which both teams skated and checked hard, collapsed in front of their net and just generally made it near impossible to make a play.

Lundqvist has been a Bruins killer. The win improved his career record against them to 11-3-2, with four shutouts in 16 career appearances.

Yet the B’s didn’t feel the Swede really had to do anything all that exceptional to get his latest win.

“I thought Lundqvist was solid, but their team ‘D’ was pretty good,” Thomas said. “Actually, both teams’ ‘D’ was good. . . . Neither team was able to set up any really goods plays because the other team was doing such a good job on penalty kills. Basically, it was just go for a shot and hope for a tip or rebound.”

The B’s power play, which has accomplished little this season, was 0-for-5 in a game in which just one conversion would have changed everything.

Still, it’s hard to get too critical of the Bruins, who in the last week or two have played so much better than they did early in the season.

“You’d like to win ’em all,” Thomas said. “But we are headed in the right direction, even if we’re not getting good results in every game. Our defensive effort is good. Actually, our offensive effort is good, too. It just isn’t happening.

“The guys are trying as hard as they can. There was no lack of effort that I could see.”
