Speaking  p106

1 Suggested answers

Photo A

I think it’s a cookery lesson.

There are three students and a teacher. The students (two men and a woman) are wearing blue aprons. It looks like a uniform so I think it’s in a college. They might be in their twenties. The teacher is wearing a white chef’s uniform and a hat.

There are pots and pans on the stove, which is between the students and the teacher.

The teacher is pouring some oil into a saucepan. I think the students are feeling happy and are enjoying the lesson because they are all leaning forward and watching what the teacher is doing and smiling. The teacher is smiling too, so I think she is enjoying the lesson as well.

Photo B

I think it’s a lesson in a school.

There’s a woman standing in front of the class: she’s about thirty. She is wearing a blue cardigan and black skirt. She is watching one of the pupils, a boy who looks about 14 or 15, who is also standing in front of the class. He is talking to the rest of the class. I think it’s a talk he has prepared, because he is holding some notes.

We can see five other members of the class (girls and boys) facing the teacher and the boy giving the talk. They are sitting at their desks and listening to the talk.

I think the boy and his teacher are feeling happy because they are both smiling. I think the boy might be feeling proud.

3In answer 1b the student is answering a different question from the one asked: ‘Do you like talking?’ or ‘Do you talk a lot?’ Also, it isn’t long enough. In answer 2a the student begins by copying the language in the question (I don’t mind talking

to people) rather than using new language, as in answer 2b. Answer 2b also shows knowledge of a wider range of structures and vocabulary than answer 2a.

In answer 3b, the student’s answer is too short and does not really answer the question. This is what is known as a hypothetical question. The question asks Would you enjoy a job which ... ?, which means the person answering has to imagine themselves doing that job; the fact that they have never tried that kind of job in real life is irrelevant.

5Hi Suzie, (optional comma)

Thanks for your last letter. You told me / said that you went to an 18th birthday party. It sounded great!

I went to a really good party two weeks ago. It was a surprise party for my parents to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. We had a fantastic meal and afterwards there was music and dancing. The best bit for me was probably the food. I always love eating! The worst bit was that we ran out of coke and I had to drink water.

I hope we can go to a party together one day. Bye for now.

Love Claudia
