video field-In film and video production, either of the two half-frames that constitute an individual frame.

videotape controller-In film and video production, a device that controls a video tape recorder to allow it to record a single frame at a time.

view-In general, the way a scene is seen through a default or custom camera. Among the characteristics that define a view are the camera’s position, viewing direction, rotation, and field of view.

view axis-A display of the XYZ coordinates, located in the bottom left corner of a view.

ViewCube-A navigation element that appears in the top right corner of the scene view that provides visual feedback about the current camera view in relation to the 3D scene and lets you quickly and easily switch between scene views.

Visor-A window that displays the rendering-related nodes currently used in a scene, and provides access to files on disk which the user may wish to bring into the scene

visualization map-A 3-dimensional visualization of a photon map or final gather map.

volume axis field-In dynamics, an effect that moves particles in various directions in a volume, relative to the axis of the volume.

volumetric material-In rendering, a description of the physical appearance of phenomena which occupy a volume of space (for example, fog or particles).

vortex field-In dynamics, an effect that pulls objects in a circular or spiraling direction. Use vortex fields with particles to create effects such as whirlpools or tornados.

voxel-An individual grid unit in a fluid container. Short for volume pixel.

VTR-Videotape Recorder

Glossary: W

wake-In fluid effects, the use of fluid emitters to simulate boat wakes, bubbles, ripples and other types of turbulence on an ocean or pond.

warp image-A UV modeling tool that modifies a texture image by comparing a source UV set and a destination UV set on a single polygonal mesh. A new image is produced as a result.

wave deformer-In animation, a deformer that alters the shape of an object based on a circular sine wave for ripple effects.

weight-The degree of influence of a point during deformation

wheelmouse-The scrolling wheel on a mouse input device.

wire deformer-In animation, a deformer that uses one or more NURBS curves to change the shape of objects.

wire dropoff locator-In animation, a way for you to create localized deformation effects along a wire deformer’s influence curve.

wireframe-A display technique that shows a geometric object as a collection of lines.

working units-The linear units, angular units, and time settings you normally work with.

workspace-The area in the Maya window where view panels appear.

world space-The coordinate system for the entire scene.

world up vector-In animation, the up direction.

wrap deformer-In animation, a deformer that uses NURBS or polygonal objects to shape deformable objects.

wrinkle deformer-In animation, a deformer that combines a cluster deformer with one or more wire deformers, useful for creating detailed wrinkling effects.

Glossary: X

xform-

x-ray shading-A display technique that shows shaded surfaces as semi-transparent surfaces.

XYZ coordinate system-A 3D coordinate system that lets you create characters and scenes with dimensionally accurate values.

Glossary: Y

Y-up world-An orientation of the XYZ coordinate system where the X axis is the horizontal and Z is the depth of the scene.

Glossary: Z

zoom-In general, the act of moving closer to or farther away from an object. In Maya, zooming a camera means changing the lens’s focal length. The camera does not move, but the scene in the camera’s view becomes larger or smaller.

Z-up world-An orientation of the XYZ coordinate system that starts with a ground plane representing the X and Y directions, with Z representing the up direction.

Glossary: Numerics

2D motion blur-In rendering, a fast way to approximate true (3D) motion blur.

3D motion blur-In rendering, a technique that computes accurate blur based on a camera’s shutter angle, and the motion blur frame step.

3D paint tool-A technique of painting directly on models in 3D space using either Artisan and Paint Effects brushes.
