Task 1

Read the text below and think of a word which best fits each space. Use only one word in each space. There is an example at the beginning (0). Explain your choice.

Fish and chips

If you ask any British person (0) to name the country’s national dish, you (1) ………… probably receive the answer: ‘fish and chips’. But that person might be surprised to learn that the chips, or fried potatoes, (2) ……….. probably invented by the French, and that the whole dish only dates back (3) ………… around 1860. Complaining can be used constructively, for example
