Rules

1For words ending with a consonant plus y, change y to i before adding any suffix except -ing.

2For words ending in a single vowel plus a single consonant, double the final consonant before adding a suffix if the final syllable is stressed.

3 For words ending in e, drop the e before adding a suffix beginning with a vowel ...

4 ... but keep the e if the suffix begins with a consonant.

5When a prefix ends with the same letter as the first one of the word, keep both letters.

6The -ful suffix at the end of many adjectives is always written with one I .. .

7... but if you add the -Iy adverb suffix, then there will be two Is.

8i before e, except after c, when the pronunciation is li:1 ...

9... but with other pronunciations (usually l eI/). the e comes first.

10When the C is pronounced 'sh',the i comes first.
