Complex Object.

Complex Object is the construction containing a noun (or a pronoun in objective case) plus an infinitive.

The construction works as an object in the sentence after verbs of certain groups denoting

  1. desire: to want, to wish, to desire, should (would) like, to like, to hate,

e.g. I'd like you to do the work by Saturday.

      1. Мне бы хотелось, чтобы вы сделали работу к субботе.

  1. physical perception: to see, to watch, to observe, to notice, to hear, to feel (no "to" is used with the Infinitive after the verbs of this group),

e.g. Did you ever hear him play the piano?

      1. Вы когда-нибудь слышали, как он играет на пианино?

  1. mental perception: to expect, to think/believe, to consider, to find, to know, to declare (usually with the verb "to be" as the infinitive, but any verb is used after the verb "expect"),

e.g. I know them to be right.

      1. Я знаю, что они правы.

      2. I consider her ( to be) a clever woman, and charming too.

      3. Я считаю её умной женщиной, и к тому же очаровательной.

      4. He knew himself to be the strongest of the boys.

      5. Он знал, что он самый сильный из мальчиков.

      6. We expected him to arrive an hour later.

      7. Мы ожидали, что он прибудет на час позже.

      8. We expect the children to be taken care of.

      9. Мы ожидаем, что о детях позаботятся.

      10. He expects to be invited to the party ( no "himself" is used after the verb "expect").

      11. Он ожидает, что его пригласят на вечер.

  1. order, request, permission: to order, to command, to ask, to allow (the infinitive is in passive.),

e.g. The customs officer allowed the passengers to be taken to the passage.

      1. Таможенник разрешил провести пассажиров к проходу.

      2. The captain ordered the goods to be loaded.

      3. Капитан приказал, чтобы товары погрузили.

  1. some verbs with prepositions after them:

e.g. They relied upon you to make all the preparations.

      1. Они рассчитывали, что вы все подготовите.

      2. We have been waiting for you to appear.

      3. Мы всё ждем, что ты появишься.

Ex.7. Translate the following sentences.

  1. Everybody heard him say so.

  2. We consider her to have been a good dancer.

  3. They supposed this ancient book to be three hundred years old.

  4. They thought the patient to be out of danger.

  5. We heard somebody speak Spanish in the next room.

  6. They do not expect the government to cut taxes as it has promised.

  7. The parents wanted their children to choose good over bad.

  8. We asked for the luggage to be taken to the station.

  9. I couldn't get him to review the whole material.

  10. The method allows the data to be studied thoroughly.

  11. The committee considers this problem very important.

  12. He felt somebody touch his shoulder.

  13. They thought him an outstanding man of all times.

  14. The children expected to be invited to the New Year party.

  15. They relied upon you to complete the description of the industrial process.

Ex.8. Use Complex Object instead of the subordinate clause.

  1. He saw that the professor came in.

  2. They didn't think that the work of the parliament was very efficient.

  3. One can hardly expect that a truely good sportsman will stay away from his training classes.

  4. We have never heard that so many points can be discussed within one hour.

  5. Both sides expected that the agreement would eventually be signed.

  6. They suppose that his success is accidental.

  7. The teacher finds that her pupils are serious enough.

  8. Plato believed that necessity is the mother of invention.

  9. I've heard that you have graduated from the University.

  10. We were surprised at hearing that he spoke English so fluently.

  11. They expect that the experiment will show good results.

  12. Have you ever seen how this actress performs on the stage?

  13. Nobody knows that he is writing a new book.

  14. He thought that he was absolutely right.

Ex.9. Combine the two sentences using Complex Object. Give two variants (Active and Passive Infinitive) if possible.
