Is there the jury in Soviet courts?

No, there isn't. The court consists of the judge and two people's assessors who are elected for a term of two years.

What are the rights of the people's assessors?

The same as judge's. They together decide if the accused is guilty or innocent and what form of punishment to impose on him.

Who are the participants in criminal trials?

These are the prosecutor, the accused, the counsel for defense, the victim of the crime; and in a civil trial the civil plaintiff and defendant and his representatives.

What is the role of a public prosecuting counsel and a public defending counsel?

They express public opinion in reference to the trial and thus add weight to the educational role of the court.

How is the truth established?

By the evidence of witnesses, the testimony of the accused, material evidence and other documents.

May a convicted person be released from punishment?

Yes, if a public organization from the place where he was working accepts responsibility for his reeducation.
