Отглагольное существительное
Отглагольное существительное, так же как и герундий, образуется с помощью суффикса -ing, но в отличие от герундия, который имеет признаки как существительного, так и глагола, отглагольное существительное является ничем иным, как существительным и ничем не отличается от обычных простых существительных.
Герундий и отглагольное существительное различаются по следующим признакам:
Герундий употребляется без артикля; отглагольное существительное всегда с артиклем.
Герундий может иметь прямое (беспредложное) дополнение;
отглагольное существительное – только предложное, т.е. с предлогом.
The reading of scientific books is useful.
Reading scientific books is useful.
Отглагольное существительное имеет форму множественного числа (окончание -s), герундий формы множественного числа не имеет.
The readings of this device are quite correct.
Герундий определяется наречием; отглагольное существительное определяется прилагательным (слева).
The correct readings of this device were written down.
Reading aloud is useful.
