If I were Rector of TSU…

If I were Rector of Tyumen State University I would have done lots of modifications and renovations. To be honest, I’m not sure if all the things I’m going to talk about now are included in the responsibilities of Rector, but, anyway, I’ll try to describe them.

First of all, I would have increased the number of state-funded places, especially at the humanitarian departments. Every year it becomes more and more difficult to enter the University without paying for education. For example, there were only six state-funded places at the department of linguistics in 2012.

Also I would develop the possibilities for students who study foreign languages to practice English, German or French abroad. The students of German and French chairs have such possibilities: they go to Germany or France and listen to lecture courses, attend seminars with foreign students there. But for the students of English chair such programmes aren’t organized because it’s too expensive for TSU to pay for students’ going to England or the USA. No doubt that if you talk with native speakers you develop your communicative skills and it helps you to overcome the cultural barrier if you have this one. If I were Rector of TSU I would organize lots of mobility programmes to give our students an opportunity to study at Universities abroad and foreign students to come to Russia and exchange our different cultural experiences.

More than that, I would have had all the University’s buildings repaired in order to give the students the best conditions to study and gain knowledge. For example, I would have had our labs’ facilities modernized. Listening is one of the most important aspects of studying foreign languages and I think that students should spend more time in labs. That’s why everything should be done to make the labs’ facilities as convenient and modern as possible. By the way, I would have had all the hostels repaired, especially Hostel №5. In spite of the fact that it’s situated in the city centre, the hostel’s living conditions are pretty bad.

Also I would have had some new hostels built, because there aren’t enough places for students to live. Because of it those people, who come from Tyumen or other regions, have to rent a flat of a room.

Moreover, as Rector of TSU, I would have increased an amount of scholarships. Students paid from state budget can be counted on the fingers of one hand, so I suppose it won’t take a lot of money. Also I would have established special rewards for straight A’s students, because I’m sure it’ll motivate them to study better.

In conclusion I would like to say that it’s pretty easy to suppose what you could have done if you were Rector of TSU. But in reality there are a lot of problems which Rector faces every day that can be much more important than those I have mentioned. But anyway I’ll be very glad if my suggestions are discussed and taken into consideration.
