The Passive Voice

Form be + Past Participle

Present Simple: They make this cheese in France.The cheese is made in France.

Past Simple: He broke the window yesterday.The window was broken yesterday.

Use:when the person or thing doing the action is obvious or important

EX. The house was built in a month.

  • when the person or thing doing the action is not known

EX. Stonehenge was constructed in about 3000 BC.

  • to describe how something is made or how it works

EX. Glass is made from sand, soda and limestone

3.1 Find in the text examples of the verb forms

Present Simple Passive, Past Simple Passive.

3.2 Rewrite these sentences using the Passive form.

  1. Someone has stolen my bicycle!

  2. The teacher gave him a good mark for his composition.

  3. You take several different types of plants to analyze.

  4. They will finish the new office block by the New Year.

  5. They teach all children to read and write.

Comparatives

Use: to compare two things, people etc.

Form: One-syllable adjective: adjective + er (-r) (+than)

Two-syllable adjective: more + adjective (+than)

Superlatives

Use: to compare three or more things, people, etc.

Form: One-syllable adjective the + adjective + est

Two-syllable adjective: the most + adjective

3.4 Compare subjects.

EX. Chemistry is easier than physics.
