Use the proper forms of the verbs in brackets and make the text complete

Text 1

A Philosopher

Once a philosopher traveled down a river on a small boat. While he (to cross) the river he (to ask) the boatman: “You ever (to hear) about Philosophy? “No,” – (say) the boatman. “I have never (to hear) about it. What (to be) it?” “I (to be) sorry for you, indeed,’ replied the learned man, “you (to lose) a quarter of your life as it’s a very interesting science!” several minutes later the Philosopher asked the boatman another question; “You (to hear) about Astronomy, when you (to be) at school?” “No, I (to leave) school many years ago and I 9to forget) all about it”, - was the answer. To this the philosopher answered that he (to be) really sorry for the man, and he (to think) that the boatman (to lose) a second quarter of his life.

Some minutes passed and the passenger again (to wonder) if the man ever (to hear) about Algebra. And the man (to have to) admit that he never (to know) about it. ‘In that case you certainly (to lose) a third quarter of your life!” – said the scientist.

At that very moment the boat (to strike) on a big stone. The boatman jumped and (to cry). “You ever (learn) (to swim)?” “No,” – was the answer. The boatman explained sadly to the philosopher that he (to be) sure that he (to lose) his whole life as the boat (to sink).

Text 2

Tarzan’s friend

A forester, with his dog Tarzan, was riding through the thick forest. Suddenly his horse (to stop). The forester (to feel) that something (to frighten) it. He looked round and (to see) a pack of wolves (to come) to them. Then the dog (to run) over to the wolves, (to sniff) and (to disappear) with them in the forest.

The forester remembered the day when he (to find) a helpless hungry wolf – cub. He (to pick) it up, (to bring) it home, (to warm) it up, (to give) it food and (to put) it in Tarzan’s dog house. Soon the place where he (to find) him and (to leave) him there.

Now the forester understood why the wolves not (attack) him or his dog. Among them (to be) Tarzan’s friend.

Tarzan (to return) home the next morning safe and sound.

Text 3

Ferenz List

Ferenz List, the famous composer and pianist, was a very kind man. This story shows how kind he was. Once there lived a poor girl with her mother and a younger brother. The girl (to study) music and (to be) very talented. One day her brother (to catch) a cold and (to fall) ill. The doctor (to send) for but they (to be) so poor that they (can) not (to pay) for his visit and the medicine he (to prescribe).

So the girl (to think) of a plan. She decided that she (to tell) the people that Ferenz List (to teach) her music for some years already “If people (to learn) about List it (to attract) them to my concert and I (to be able) to earn some money to keep my brother”. And so she (to do).

But one day while she (to look) through a newspaper she (to see) a note in which it (to write) that the famous composer Ferenz List is going to give some concerts in their town. The girl was afraid that if List (to learn) that she (to tell) the people a lie, he (to tell) everybody that he never (to see) her. As soon as List ((to come) the girl (to go) to him and (to tell) him the whole story. After she (to finish) List (to say): (Sit) down to the piano and (to play) for me!” While she (to play) List (to make) some remarks and at the end of the class he (to say) to the girl: ‘Now, when somebody (to ask) you who your teacher (to be) you (can) (to say) it’s me, because I (to give) you my first class today!”
