Money

Money is used for buying or selling goods, for measuring (вимірювання) value (вартість) and for storing (збереження) wealth. Almost every society now has a money economy based on coins and paper bills of one kind or another. However, this has not always been true. In primitive societies a system of barter was used. Barter was a system of direct (прямий) exchange of goods. Somebody could exchange a sheep, for example, for anything in the marketplace that they considered (вважати) to be of equal value. Barter, however, was a very unsatisfactory system, because people's precise (точний) needs seldom coincided.(співпадати) People needed more practical system of exchange, and various money systems based on goods which the members of a society recognized as having value. Cattle (худоба), grain (зерно), teeth, shells, feathers (пір’я), salt, elephant tusks, and tobacco have all been used. Precious (дорогоцінний) metals gradually took over because, when made into coins, they were portable (портативний), durable (довгостроковий), recognizable, and divisible (подільний) into larger and smaller units of value. A coin is a piece of metal, usually disc-taped, which bears (мати на собі) lettering, designs or numbers showing its value. Until the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, coins were given monetary worth (вартість) based on the exact (точний) amount (кількість) of metal contained in them, but most modern coins are based on face value — the value that governments choose to give them, irrespective of (незалежно від) the actual metal content (вміст). Most governments now issue paper money in the form of bills, which are really "promises to pay". Paper money is obviously easier to handle and much more convenient in the modern world. Checks and credit cards are being used increasingly, and it is possible to imagine a world where "money" in the form of coins and paper currency will no longer be used.

MONEY

I. Read the teenagers’ statements and discuss if money is the most important thing in your live?

Robert: Money is useful to have but I don't think it's the most important thing. I want a job that I'll enjoy. I don't want a job that gives me a lot of money that I can't spend because I'm too busy.

Tim: I'm not particularly materialistic. I am not interested in being very rich if I can't be happy. What's the point of being rich if you hate living?

Jillian: No, I don't think money is important. I want to be a doctor not for the money but because it is a caring profession.

Alice: Money is very important to me. I think money's great but other things can make you happier. Being alive and well are more important. Happiness comes from inside and can't be bought.

Laura: Money is essential for many things but it can't buy you everything. I think you need happiness more than money.

Dan: I'm quite materialistic so money's very important to me. I'm sure there are a lot of rich people who are happy. If I am rich when I'm older I might help less fortunate people but I don't usually help them now.

Tom: Money is a useful addition to everyone's life. It's nice to be wealthy enough to buy things that you want. Money helps you to do a lot of things but it can't buy you love or health. Therefore it can't always buy you happiness. In the future, if I'm rich, I'll help poorer people. Money is not a major factor in my career choice. I'd like to be a scriptwriter or an actor.
