A PLANNED CAREER
I have got a son who is 10 years old. As I want Ted to be a successful businessman I have carefully planned his career. He will certainly get a good education, and at the age of 21 he is to send his resume to the Sales Majestic Co., whose head-office is just opposite our apartment house. The company will accept him as a clerk. Ted will be responsible for dealing with correspondence and other papers; of course, this is not a very nice job for a smart young man, but one has to start somehow.
In less than two years he is to be promoted and get a higher payment. I do not know yet what position this will be, but Ted will do well and in a short time he will be appointed the head of the company delivery service. A great fleet of lorries delivers goods sold by the Sales Majestic all over the country and Ted will be in command of the fleet. I am really proud of my son whenever I think of all these lorries and drivers, whose supervisor he will be.
His activities and fresh ideas inevitably will make the company highly profitable. The management will see that Ted is very capable and hard-working, so he will be made the personnel manager; perhaps he will get even higher...
I can visualize this very clearly - when I close my eyes and do not see Ted drawing horrible monsters with repulsive horns and claws. He is drawing them day and night, dreaming of Boris Vallejo's fame. How stupid! I try to make him understand that he has before him a brilliant career, but Ted never listens to my words, absorbed in drawing.
2. Answer the questions:
1. If you were a friend of young Ted what would you advise him to do?
2. Does the prospect described by Ted's parent appeal to you personally? Why?
3. Do the parent's ideas seem logical to you?
