Exercises on Participle I, II

I. Write down all forms of Participle I.

stop, cut, forget, begin, study, open, play, write, give, receive, take.

II. Translate the sentences from English into Russian, paying special attention to the function of the

Participle in the sentence.

  1. You can get the recommended book in the library.

  2. Receiving no letters from her father, she called him.

  3. She stood leaning against the wall.

  4. Having signed the letter the manager asked the secretary to send it off at once.

  5. Having been well prepared for the interview, he could answer all the questions.

  6. These machines will be sent to the plant being constructed in this region.

  7. When writing an essay we must use new words and phrases.

  8. Being a great book-lover, he spent a lot of money on books.

  9. The figures mentioned in his article were published in the Izvestia.

  10. Having been three times seriously wounded, he was no longer fit for active service.

III. Translate the following participles.

разбитая чашка, проигранная игра, разорванный конверт, выигравший спортсмен, смотрящий,

давая, построенный, открывающий, видя, рассказанный, кипящая вода, жареная рыба,

жарящаяся рыба, смеющаяся девушка, забытый метод, найденное решение.

IV. Join the groups of sentences, using participles.

Model: 1. He got off the bus. He helped his grandmother. –

Getting off the bus, he helped his grandmother. (2 одновременных действия)

2. They found the treasure. They began quarrelling about how to divide it. –

Having found the treasure, they began quarrelling about how to divide it.

(сначала нашли сокровища, потом поссорились)

3. He was exhausted by his work. He threw himself on the bed. –

Being exhausted by his work, he threw himself on the bed.

  1. She entered the room suddenly. She found them smoking. (model # 2)

  2. She realized that she couldn’t move it alone. She asked me to help. (model # 1)

  3. I knew that the grass was very wet. I didn’t like to sit down.

  4. He fed the dog. He sat down to his own dinner.

  5. We visited the museum. We decided to have lunch in the park.

  6. I was astonished at what I saw. I turned off the light.

  7. I looked through the fashion magazines. Now I realize that my clothes are out-of-date.

  8. The letter was addressed to the wrong house. The letter never reached my friend.

  9. He was disappointed to have no friends. He became a monk.

  10. He missed the last train. He began to walk.

V. Open the brackets using the appropriate form of the Participle.

  1. She went to work, (to leave) the child with the nurse.

  2. (to lay) down on the soft couch, the child fell asleep at once.

  3. (to wait) in the hall, he thought over the problem he was planning to discuss with the old lady.

  4. (to spend) twenty years abroad, he was happy to be coming home.
