PRESENT PERFECT

CONTINUOUS

PRESENT PERFECT

  • an activity at some non-specific time in the past with a result in the present or future

(an action over a period of time):

We have been working on the new project. - …работаем

(an action at a point of time):

We have just completed our work on this project. - …завершили

  • the continuity and duration of the activity

I’ve been reading your report. I’m rather tired. - …читал

  • finished actions that have a result in the present

I’ve read your report. It’s rather detailed. - …прочитал...

  • The PRESENT PERFECT emphases the idea of completion (=the homework is finished); we use the PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS to indicate that the action has lasted for a period and is incomplete. Compare:

I’ve read the newspaper today. (= I’ve finished it)

I’ve been reading the Encyclopaedia Britannica. (= I haven’t finished it yet)

  • Time expressions used with the present perfect simple include:

  • We often use the PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS with for and since:

I’ve been waiting for a whole hour!

  • We use since to indicate a starting-point:

They haven’t met since the wedding. (= since + noun phrase)

  • We can use It’s a long time, two weeks, etc. + since + PAST SIMPLE to focus on the period:

It’s ages since I saw Eva.
