The System of Higher Education in Great Britain.

The British institution responsible for national educational policy is called (since 1964) the Department of Education and Science (DEC), which is headed by the Secretary of State for Education and Science or at less formal style the Educational Secretary.

Applicants for entry in the UK do not take entrance exams to universities and polytechnics. They are admitted on the basis of their results in the school exams. Those who pass the exams are awarded the General Certificate of Education (GCE). It is taken in two separate stages:

- Ordinary level (“O”- level), usually taken at 16.

- Advanced level (“A”- level), usually taken at 18.

Some students leave school at 16 and go on to a technical college which is not a higher educational institution because it does not award a degree.

Higher education is provided by a great number of universities ( including the Open University ) and polytechnics. Virtually all higher education is selective, usually depending on how well a student does in GCE “A” level.

First degree courses at English universities usually last three years, though there is an extra year for work in industry ( industrial Studies ). After 3 years of study students take degree exams or “ finals ”. If they pass them successfully, they are awarded a degree. First degrees in engineering are Bachelor of Science ( BSc ), Bachelor of Technology ( BTech ) or Bachelor of Engineering ( BEng ).

It is very common for technical institutions to provide sandwich courses. They consist of periods of study alternating with periods of work, usually in industry. A student, attending such a course is called a sandwich student.

Many honours graduates who are keen on research continue their studies. They apply for post- graduate courses for a master’s degree. The course lasts for 2 years and he/ she gets a Master degree ( MSc ) in a specialised subject. Research studies for 3 years more are necessary for a Doctor of Philosophy degree ( PhD ). The word “ philosophy ” has no special reference to Philosophy, the name is the same for all faculties.

There is another type of doctorate, which is called in full a senior doctorate. The name of a particular senior doctorate depends on the field of specialisation, e.g. for science subjects- Doctor of Science ( DSc ).

The majority of engineers are content with the first degree and do not enter postgraduate courses. However many of them attempt to register as a chartered engineer (CEng ), which is the highest qualification for graduate engineers in the UK.

For registration the engineer must have a degree, 2 years of practical training and at least two more years of practice in a real engineering environment. The registration generally takes the form of a written exam based on a real engineering problem and an interview.

Notes.

  1. Bachelor degree- ученая степень бакалавра, первая ученая степень, присуждается после 3- х лет обучения в колледже или университете при условии успешной сдачи выпускных экзаменов.

  2. Master of Science ( MSc )-

  5. chartered engineer ( CEng )- инженер – эксперт, член Ассоциации дипломированных инженеров ( Council of Engineering Institutions- CEI )
