1. Work in pairs. Take turns to think of a typical dish in your country and describe it to your partner. Don't say what it is. Your partner must guess the dish you're describing.

2. A friend of yours invited you to dine out. You want to go to a restaurant with English cuisine while your friend wants to go to a traditional Russian restaurant. Discuss with your friend both cuisines and come to conclusion where to go.

3. Do you know that there are different cultural attitudes to food? For example, in Japan, participating in a Japanese tea ceremony is a fine art and there’s an elaborate ceremonial about it. Not drinking tea in the right way is considered to be uncivilized.

4. Think and tell your group mates about cultural attitudes you know of in other countries.

Unit IX. ENGLISH STEREOTYPES

QUESTION TIME

What is a stereotype in you opinion? Read some definitions of stereotypes and say if they coincide with your ideas.

Definition 1: A fixed, over generalised belief about a particular group or class of people.

Definition 2: A belief that people of a certain group, race or religion all have the same characteristics when they don't.

Definition 3: An idea that is taken for granted but not necessarily proven.

Definition 4: General ideas of a person, created without taking the whole person into account.

In every country there are plenty of stereotypes about residents, some maybe true but most of them are untrue and very wrongful. Read the following sayings. Do you agree with them? What other stereotypes about English-speaking countries do you know?

American thoughts on the British: British are all pretentious and look down their noses at other cultures. The British are all obese from food that is either boiled or deep fried.

Russian thoughts on the British: They wear unimaginative formal clothes, eat tasteless food, practise slow sports and have a peculiar sense of humor which is usually not understood by foreigners. They are also said to be conservative, reserved and cool. They are completely crazy about pets. They have a strong attachment to tradition and a desire to keep their country’s uniqueness.

Do you really know what the English are like? What are the first three things which come into your mind when you hear the words 'England' or 'the English’?
