3.2 Exterior

 The exterior of the Chrysler building is breathtaking. An arched spire sheathed in stainless steel, the eagle gargoyles, and punctuated with triangular shaped windows gives this well-known skyscraper a highly dramatic appearance.

First of all, the shining metal of its exterior includes not only story high basket weave designs but also enormous hood ornament gargoyles and a band of abstract automobiles. The eagle gargoyles at the corner of the setbacks are located on the 59^th floor, and the winged radiator caps at the 31^st level. It gives the building an impressive profile. Many elements were taken from actual Chrysler automobile products.

In addition, one of the most distinctive features of the Chrysler building- is the spire on the top of it. It’s the Van Alen’s most striking feat of showmanship- 27 –tone still spire, which pushed its height to 1,046 feet. The spire secretly assembled inside of the building, was hoisted through the top aperture to the amazement of onlookers. The stainless steel- spired crown based on Chrysler automobile ornaments, built from Krupp Enduro KA-2 Nirosta stainless steel. At night its florescent crown glows bright, illuminating the distinctive design and creating an unforgettable symbol and spectacle.

In conclusion, the Chrysler Building immensely skillful piece of art deco style which is became very popular after its construction. William Van Alen used the nontraditional materials for the construction of the building. Even in today’s Manhattan, surrounded by taller buildings, the dome still draws the eye. As I mentioned, the building is regarded as one of the America’s greatest buildings. It has rarely glittered on films, magazines and architectural books. With its dramatic effects, elegant materials, and striking ornamental details, the ground floor interior of the Chrysler Building is an outstanding example of the Art Deco style— among the finest in the city and the country, and the exterior is breathtaking. It catches the eye of people on the street. The Chrysler is one of the most unique skyscrapers in New York. As a skyscraper it was one of the tallest structures during many years ago. Nowadays it’s the third tallest building in the city. The building has earned its place in history books and was declared a national historical landmark. It inspires with it’s amazing and unrepeatable design.
