Direct Ignition
The Saab Direct Ignition system is yet another example of Saab’s innovative technology. This ignition system ensures reliable starting, reduced service costs and lower fuel consumption.
The Saab DI system is a capacitive ignition system that has no moving parts. The ignition timing is permanently preset at the factory. This ensures reliable starting in any weather-and minimizes the service costs.
Reliable starting. Damp weather and low temperatures can both make a car difficult to start. The Saab Direct Ignition system eliminates all such problems. The Saab DI system has no high tension leads and no distributor cap, both of which can provide a current leakage path along a film of moisture. In the Saab DI system, an ignition coil is mounted directly on each spark plug, which guarantees a reliable spark In extremely cold weather, the Saab Direct Ignition system offers additional security. It generates an ignition voltage of 40.000 volts, instead of the 25.000 volts delivered by a conventional ignition system. Even if the battery voltage is low, the Saab DI system will still fire a reliable spark.
The high voltage is generated in two stages. In the first stage, 12 volts is stepped up to 400 volts by capacitive charging. In the second stage, the 400 volts is stepped up to 40.000 volts in the four ignition coils one on each spark plug.
Since the ignition coils step up the voltage «only» 100-fold (as against the 2000 - fold step-up in a conventional ignition system), the Saab DI coils are so small that they can be mounted in a cartridge immediately above the spark plugs. The cartridge provides effective protection against moisture and dirt.
