A Wider Classroom

As the clock neared noon, we took our lunch break in the shade of a small tree in Jim's front yard. Sam, our moderator, planted Jim's chair beside us and announced that since he was eager to help in any way possible, Jim would lead us in a before-meal prayer. He kept it succinct and we all began to eat.

"Let me tell you a story ... " he then began. And from the pit of his humble heart he began

to unravel his eighty-some-odd years for us. He was a school teacher and a baseball coach who had a loyal dog named Pretty-Face. He told of old hunting expeditions in the mountains where his life was almost lost to a bear, and he talked of conquering a rattlesnake, even showing us the rattles.

Then his cavernous eyes just wandered off as if he was no longer talking solely for our benefit, but more for his own. He described that day his dog died, as fat tears rolled down his weathered cheeks and he gripped the end of his cane. He recalled her loyalty to the end as with one last thump of the tail, looking up at him, Pretty-Face passed on. He remembered his wife gazing up at him much the same way seconds before her death.

He always affectionately called his wife "Mama," and he told of how she'd always stayed, up until the small hours of the morning to bake the bread for the next day, while he, often tired from a long day of teaching or hunting, would retire to bed. "Why didn't I just stay up with her?" he said in a distant voice as his eyes gazed beyond us. "Why couldn't I have just taken that extra time? Why?"

I remember how profoundly those words rang inside of me. Here was a man brimming with wisdom and reflections on his life, telling me to make the most of mine, to take that extra time with those I love. I was inspired; I was mesmerized by this extraordinary old man that had thought I was helping. Jim's house was not a job at all, it was a classroom.

Visiting Theme Parks

One important American contribution to vacation fun is the theme park. Theme parks are a variation on the outdoor entertainment complexes called amusement parks, which were so popular from the 1890's to the 1990's. Like amusement parks, theme parks have carnival games, rides, shows, displays, shops that sell souvenirs, and restaurants and food' stands. But theme parks tend to be much larger and more high-tech than the older amusement parks. Furthermore, they are not just assorted outdoor activities in one location. They are developed around a theme or idea, such as American or regional history, marine life, water sports, or African safaris. Many are quite educational as well as entertaining. Theme parks have great appeal to people of all ages and are often a family's primary vacation destination. As a result, American amusement and theme parks combined take in about $7 billion a year!

Walt Disney, the famous American cartoonist and filmmaker, started it all in 1955 when he opened the first theme park, Disneyland, near Los Angeles, California. Its theme is children's stories, specifically those that were made into Disney animated films. Disney cartoon characters such as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck are also featured.

Disneyland's great success inspired the building of parks elsewhere in the U.S. and Europe. The largest is Walt Disney World, the most popular vacation spot in the world. This complex covers 43 square miles near Orlando, Florida. It includes four major theme parks plus several minor ones. First, there's the Magic Kingdom, which is similar to Disneyland.

In addition to the wonderful rides, visitors love its amazing mechanical figures that appear in many exhibits - everything from dancing, singing bears to a life-sized, gesturing, speech-giving Abraham Lincoln. The second park, Epcot Centre, contains two main sections: Future World highlights technologies of the future; World Showcase features the architecture, crafts, food, and entertainment of 11 nations. The third park, Disney-MGM Studios, has Hollywood film-making as its theme. The newest park - Animal Kingdom - has about 1,000 animals, including some rare and endangered ones. The Walt Disney World complex includes four lakes and about 100 restaurants. It's impossible to see and do everything in Walt Disney World, even in several days. A visitor needs two important things - a pair of comfortable shoes and the patience to stand in long lines.

 Reality TV

Reality television is a genre of television programming which, it is claimed, presents unscripted dramatic or humorous situations, documents actual events, and features ordinary people rather than professional actors. It could be described as a form of artificial or "heightened" documentary. Although the genre has existed in some form or another since the early years of television, the current explosion of popularity dates from around 2000.

Reality television covers a wide range of television programming formats. Critics say that the term "reality television" is somewhat of a misnomer and that such shows frequently portray a modified and highly influenced form of reality, with participants put in exotic locations or abnormal situations, sometimes coached to act in certain ways by off-screen handlers, and with events on screen manipulated through editing and other post-production techniques.

Part of reality television's appeal is due to its ability to place ordinary people in extraordinary situations. Reality television also has the potential to turn its participants into national celebrities, outwardly in talent and performance programmes such as Pop Idol, though frequently Survivor and Big Brother participants also reach some degree of celebrity.

Some commentators have said that the name "reality television" is an inaccurate description for several styles of programme included in the genre. In competition-based programmes such as Big Brother and Survivor, and other special-living-environment shows like The Real World, the producers design the format of the show and control the day-today activities and the environment, creating a completely fabricated world in - which the competition plays out. Producers specifically select the participants, and use carefully designed scenarios, challenges, events, and settings to encourage particular behaviors and conflicts. Mark Burnett, creator of Survivor and other reality shows, has agreed with this assessment, and avoids the word "reality" to describe his shows; he has said, "I tell good stories. It really is not reality TV. It really is unscripted drama."
