Read the passages below and match them with the appropriate major group.

A)____________ is a government under the direct rule of God. The first man, Adam, lived under a theocracy.

B)____________ is a system of government in which the power and authority to rule are in the hands of a single individual. This is one of the most common and oldest forms of government. Historically, most autocrats have maintained their positions of authority by inheritance. There are several forms of this government. One is absolute or totalitarian dictatorship. In totalitarian dictatorship, the ideas of a single leader or group of leaders are glorified. The government seeks to control all aspects of social and economic life. Monarchy is another form of this government. In a monarchy a king, queen, or emperor exercises the supreme powers of government. Monarchs usually inherit their positions.

C)____________ is any system of government in which the people have the rule. The ancient Greeks used the word democracy to mean government by the many in contrast to government by the few. They key is that the people hold ultimate power. Abraham Lincoln best captured this spirit by describing it as government of the people, by the people, for the people. It may take one of two forms: direct (the people govern themselves by voting on issues individually as citizens) and indirect or representative (the people elect representatives and give them the responsibility and authority to make laws and to conduct government).

D) In a _______________, voters hold sovereign power. The citizens elect or acquiesce to representatives. These representatives are charged with the responsibility of carrying out the administration of the government according to the law rather than their wishes or the wishes of the people. Under a true __________, citizens are subject to a written body of laws rather than to the whims of one man or a group of men.

Functions of three branches of government

1. In Unit 4 you read about three branches of government. Now illustrate and summarize the functions of the three branches of government accordingly:

Knowledge: identify and define the functions of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government.

Reasoning: analyze the similarities and differences of the functions of each branch of government.

Communication: produce a diagram that is well-organized and well-detailed; express all ideas in a way that provides evidence of knowledge and reasoning processes.

Procedures

1. Draw a three-circle Venn diagram on the functions of the three branches of government as follows:

- show the similarities and differences between and among the three branches of government. The outside section of each circle should be used to describe the functions unique to a branch of government. The overlap between two branches should be used to describe the functions common to both branches. The overlap in the middle of the three circles should be used to describe the functions common to all three branches.

2. Explain the functions of one branch and tell what its principal responsibilities are in relationship to the others.
