Scientific Life

Kovalevsky’s Sociological Society (was restored in 1993). The main objective of the society is to bring together social scientists, people who study sociology, as well as representatives of other sciences concerned with the development of sociological knowledge. Society holds conferences on sociological education, publishes book series, "Russian sociologists" and "Russian Sociology", develops publishing projects of scientific and educational literature. Chairman of the society – A.O. Boronoev (1993-2005, now - Honorary Chairman), N.G. Skvortsov (2005).

There is a Council of Young Scientists (founded in 2006). The objective of the Council is to provide opportunities for expanding professional knowledge and to promote scientific interaction between students and teachers of humanities departments of universities of St. Petersburg.

The faculty includes:

1. Centre for Sociological Research (founded in 1996)

2. Center for Science and social work practice and student initiatives (established in 2002)

3. Monitoring Centre for Social Processes

4. Resource Centre for Social and Humanities Research

5. Institute of Gender Studies (founded in 2003), which was established on the basis of the scientific center of "Women of Russia" and has been operating since 1992.

At the Faculty there are audio-visual lab, language lab, computer and information center.

Since 1998 "Journal of Sociology and Social Anthropology" is published. It is included in the list of scientific journals WAC Russian Ministry of Education. Under the auspices of the Faculty publishes the magazine "Telescope: observation of everyday life in St. Petersburg. Sociology and Marketing.

Boronoev Asalhan Olzonovich

Boronoev Asalhan Olzonovich was born on the 25^th of June, 1937. In 1959 he joined the philosophy faculty of Leningrad State University. From 1968 A.O. Boronoev was Assistant Professor of Philosophy for the humanities at Leningrad State University. In 1978 he became an Associate Professor of the Department, since 1986 he is the head of sociology Department. In 1980, A.O. Boronoev defended his doctoral thesis on the moral and psychological problems of the socialist way of life.

A.O. Boronoev - one of the country's first researchers in the field of ethnic sociology. In 1993, the first in the country specialty "Social Anthropology" was established at the Department of Sociology. At present, social anthropologists in connection with the special demand are learning at many universities. A.O. Boronoev actively work with students, read the general and special courses, supervises theses and dissertation research. A.O. Boronoev - founder and executive editor of several well-known periodicals. In 1987, A.O. Boronoev was elected as a director of the Research Institute of Comprehensive Social Research (NIIKSI), while in 1989 he was appointed the dean of the Faculty of Sociology. He became the first dean of the new faculty. On his initiative in 1993 Kovalevsky’s Sociological Society (1916) was revived, he was it’s chairman until 2007.

During all those years at the University A.O. Boronoev actively participated in public life of the faculty – he was a member of LSU ‘s trade union, a chairman of the local committee of Leningrad State University, Deputy Secretary of Party Committee of the University, a member of the Party Committee, executive secretary of the central university admissions, etc. For more than twenty years A.O. Boronoev is a member of the Scientific Council of the University.
