I. Перепишите следующие предложения, подчеркните в каждом из них глагол-сказуемое и определите его видовременную форму и залог. Переведите предложения на русский язык. Во второй группе предложений обратите вни­мание на перевод пассивных конструкций.

II. Перепишите следующие предложения, подчеркните в них Participle I и Participle II и установите функции каждого из них, т.е. укажите, является ли оно определением, обстоятельством или частью глагола-сказуемого. Переве­дите предложения на русский язык.

1. Nylon was the first synthetic fibre used in clothing.

2. The atoms forming our planet are built of negative electrons, positive protons and ordinary neutrons.

3. This kind of treatment when used makes the metals heat-resistant.

4. When passing through an electroscope, X-rays cause its discharge.

III. Перепишите следующие предложения, подчеркните в каждом из них модальный глагол или его эквивалент. Переведите предложения на русский язык.

  1. We can think of heat as a special form of kinetic energy.

  2. A computer should solve complicated problems many millions of times faster than a mathematician.

  3. New types of plastics had to be obtained for space technology.

  4. To measure the vast distances between different planets scientists have to use special instruments.

Northern Ireland

1. Country of the U.K. lying in the northest of the island is Ire­land. The Republic of Ireland bounds it on the south and west, the Irish Sea and the North Channel on the east and the Atlantic Ocean on the north. Northern Ireland's climate is temperate and maritime. Most of its weather comes from the Southwest in a series of winds, bringing the rain and clouds that often lend a character to the lands-­ cape. Rainfall decreases from west to east and a relatively dry spring gives way to a wet summer and a wetter winter.

2. Belfast became the capital of Northern Ireland in 1920. The popu­lation is over 44000. The City Hall in the centre of Donegal square is Belfast's pride, a great Renaissance palace built in 1898-1906. In the front of it are statues of Queen Victoria. Bel­fast has theatres, a symphony orchestra, and a youth orchestra. It possesses a permanent art gallery.

3. The economy of Northern Ireland is integrated with that of the United Kingdom. Northern Ireland is an industrialized country, with manufactured goods comprising a large volume of its exports. Industries include engineering, shipbuilding, vehicle manufacture, textiles, food and beverage processing, and clothing. The shipyards of Belfast are world famous and Belfast also has chemical plants and rope factories. The city is a major port of the British Isles; other significant ports are Lame and Londonderry.
