LITTLE SQUIRT

Delphi has unveiled the next-generation of its Multec common rail technology, which now uses a unique solenoid injector design to optimize fuel rate, spray shape and accuracy. The new system provides the smallest injection quantities, highest precision fuel delivery and, along with closed loop strategies, results best-in class emission and acoustics performance, claims Delphi.

It can deliver up to 5 injections per cycle, allowing high flexibility for combustion optimization. In addition, it is capable of 1,800 bar system pressure, although initial Euro 5 applications are at 1,600 bars.

Delphi has also introduced a unique, piezo-based injector that compared to current piezo common rail technologies is expected to generate a 25 – 30 per cent reduction in emission in its first implementation and possibly leading to better results with further combustion optimization.

This Piezotec injection system will help OEMs meet Euro 5 emissions regulations on heavier vehicles and stringent new US emissions regulations, claims Delphi. It can deliver up to 7 or more injection events per cycle with extremely high fuel quantity accuracy for pilot, main and post events. The design breakthrough allows dramatically reduced spacing between events, giving engine designers full freedom to shape the flow of fuel throughout the combustion stroke.

Delphi has several diesel technologies including catalysed particulate traps, oxidation catalysed and NOx traps. It is currently developing a combined diesel NOx and particulate trap.

PETROL POWER FOR BOSH AND FORD

Bosh has boldly claimed that its newly developed DI-Motronic petrol direct injection technology, which was showcased at this year’s Frankfurt Show, will lead the petrol fight back against ever-increasing diesel sales in Europe.

Already used in Ford’s Duratec SCi 1.8 litre engine that drives the Mondeo, the new technology – Bosh claims – ensures greater torque, higher performance and lower fuel consumption.

The all-aluminums, in-line 4-cylinder petrol engine makes use of a unique Smart Charge Injection feature that, when combined with Bosh’s direct fuel injection system, results in a fuel consumption saving of 8 per cent in normal driving conditions.

With the Smart Charge Injection feature, the Ford engine takes full advantage and cuts down on fuel consumption during the lean-burn phase of the operation that occurs when the car is idling or cruising at low engine speeds. Instead of filling the entire combustion chamber with fuel and air, it allows for a small cloud to be directed at the spark.

A variable single cylinder high-pressure pump in the engine further generates the required fuel injection pressure of up to 120 bars. Once the pressure level in the reservoir has reached the electrically specified setting, a control valve in the pump allows the excess fuel to be fed back into the low-pressure fuel circulation. Electro-magnetically controlled valves spray the fuel at exactly the desired moment directly into the combustion chambers.

Compared with an engine of the same capacity using throttle-body fuel injection, engine power increased by 4 per cent to 130 ps (96 k W), while torque output is enhanced by 10 per cent at lower engine speeds.

Bosh predicts a bright future for its DI-Motrinic technology, with the German tier one hoping for an annual sales goal of one million direct injection units by 2008.
