AUSTRALIA

The Commonwealth of Australia is a self-governing federal state. It has got six states: New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania and two internal territories.

It is situated in the south-west of the Pacific Ocean.

Australia is the largest island in the world and it is the smallest continent.

Nearly twenty million people live in Australia.

The capital of the country is Canberra. There are many sights in the city. They are the Building of the Australian Academy of Sciences, the Australian National University and others. There are two big industrial cities in Australia: Sydney and Melbourne.

Australia’s climate is dry and warm. Australia is situated in the southern hemisphere and that’s why there is summer, when we have winter and there is winter, when we have summer.

Australia is separated from many countries. The animals in Australia have a lot of original, and they are interesting.

There are many rivers and lakes in the country.

Australia is an industrial country. It has coal, nickel, zinc, gold. Australia is the most important producers of metal and minerals. It exports wool production, meat, fruit, sugar.

There are some political parties in Australia: the Liberal Party, the Labour Party and the Socialist Party of Australia.

II. Выпишите из текста прилагательные в превосходной степени.

VI. Перепишите и переведите следующие предложения. Подчеркните модальные глаголы.

TEXT 2

Russian railways operate sleeping-cars on international routes over a total length of more than 185,000 km.

No matter where you begin your journey – in foggy London, burstling Paris, ancient Rome or some other city – you can reach Moscow, the capital of the Russian Federation, by train. Seventy international routes extending far to the South and East connect Moscow with practically all the European capitals. Russian railways maintain through passenger communication with 26 European and Asian countries.

At any time of the day and in any weather trains arrive and depart strictly on schedule, regardless of rain, snow or scorching heat.

Parallel with total increases in speeds in passenger international routes, the Moscow - St. Petersburg line has been equipped to operate passenger trains at maximum speeds of 200 km/h. To ensure safety of train operation, the line is equipped with a specially developed automatic cab-signalling system.
