  1. The future indefinite (simple) tense

SHALL (WILL) + V

Exercise 1. Comment on the use of the Future Simple in the following sentences. Translate the sentences into Russian.

1. Our lessons will start at 9 o’clock. 2. I shall graduate next year. 3. He will be here any minute. 4. We’ll talk about our plan and then we’ll have dinner. 5. Spring will come soon. 6. This job won’t take us long. 7. We shan’t have much time to see your mother. 8. I’m sure he’ll come back. 9. What would you like to drink? - I’ll have an orange juice, please. 10. I don’t think I’ll go out tonight. I’m too tired. 11. I need a strong bag. - I’ll get you one. 12. Martin will probably phone us this evening. 13. When will you know your exam results? 14. I won’t tell anyone what happened. I promise. 15. Will Jack play football with us. 16. Your friend will be a good film actress, won’t she?

Exercise 2. Put the verbs in brackets into the Future Simple.

1. We (hope) for the best. 2. He (want) this information in a week. 3. You (have) time to help me tomorrow? 4. He (believe) whatever you may tell him. 5. I’m sure they (understand) your point of view. 6. He (finish) his experiment soon. 7. Do you think that he (recognize) you? 8. She (take) this book from the library tomorrow. 9. Miss Green (not to sing) at the next concert. 10. Perhaps he (arrive) in time for lunch. 11. They (stay) with us next Christ- mas. 12. Do you know the way? No? Then I (show) you. 13. I never (forgive) him. 14. I’m sure that you (like) him. 15. Where we (go) in the summer holiday? - We (go) to the seaside. 16. You (be) in Rome tonight.

Exercise 3. Peter wants to see Sally. He is talking to her on the telephone. Complete the conversation using will/won’t.

Peter: You (be) at home this evening, Sally?

Sally: Well, I’m working late. I don’t expect I (finish) until after 9.00, so I (not to be) home until quite late.

Peter: Oh, I see. What about tomorrow? You (be) free for lunch?

Sally: No, I’m afraid I (be) in a meeting at lunch time.

Peter: What time do you think (end) the meeting?

Sally: I’m not sure, but it probably (not to finish) before 2.00. Listen, Peter. Why don’t we meet for a coffee after work tomorrow evening?

Peter: What time you (be) finish tomorrow?

Sally: I (be) free by 6.00.

Peter: All right. I (meet) you at your office at 6.00, then.

Sally: Right. I (see) you then.

Exercise 4. Respond to these questions saying what the person will do in the future.

Model: Nick usually comes home at 6 o’clock. And tomorrow?

Exercise 5. Explain why the person won’t do this or that thing.

Model: Will he come for supper?(be at the theatre)

No, he won’t come for supper. He’ll be at the theatre.

Exercise 6. Make the following sentences a) negative and b) interrogative.

Model: Dr. Brown will begin his lectures next month.

a) Dr. Brown won’t begin his lectures next week.

b) Will Dr. Brown begin his lectures next week?

1. The summer holidays will begin at the end of June. 2. She’ll be married in spring. 3. It’ll take me an hour to get there. 4. My brother will go to India for six months. 5. Exercise 7. Add question-tags to the following statements.
