1.1 General Welding Requirements

1. Fabrication welding shall be in accordance with qualified and Purchaser-accepted welding procedure specifications.

2. Welding shall be performed by qualified welders or welding operators.

3 Prior to welding or applying weld overlay, base metal surfaces shall be prepared by machining, grinding or blast cleaning, followed by a degreasing operation.

4 Welding to ferritic materials shall be completed prior to final PWHT.

5. Internal attachments to the austenitic stainless steel weld overlay shall be completed after PWHT. The minimum overlay thickness in the area of the attachment shall be as determined by the mock-up test outlined in Section 11.1 item f (3).

6. Acceptable methods of welding are as follows:

a. Acceptable methods of welding for pressure-containing welds are shielded metal arc (SMAW) and submerged arc (SAW).

b. Gas metal arc welding (GMAW) may be used for root pass applications in double-welded butt joints, provided the root pass is completely removed by back gouging.

c. Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) shall be permitted for root-pass applications if the NDE required for Type No. 1 welds can be satisfactorily performed.

d. Flux cored arc welding (FCAW) shall be permitted for the welding of non-pressure-containing internal components.

e. Manufacturer must obtain written authorization from Purchaser to use other welding methods.
