Present Continuous вживається:

1. Для вираження тривалої дії, що відбувається у даний момент у теперішньому часі. Цей момент може бути виражений такими позначеннями часу, як now (зараз), at present (зараз), at the moment (у цей момент) тощо.

Do you realize what are you saying? – Ви розумієте, що ви говорите?

2. Для підкреслення безперервності дії, яка відбувається не тільки у даний момент, але носить постійний характер.

The material and cultural level is steadily rising. – Матеріальний і культурний рівень неухильно підвищується.

3. Для вираження дії, яка обов’язково відбудеться у майбутньому.

She is leaving for Moscow tonight. – Вона виїжджає до Москви сьогодні

увечері.

Continuous tenses не вживаються з дієсловами, що виражають:

- відчуття: to love (любити), to like (подобатися), to hate (ненавидіти) тощо;

- сприйняття: to see (бачити), to hear (чути), to know (знати), to want (бажати) тощо;

- такими дієсловами, як to be (бути), to belong (належати), to contain (містити) і деякими іншими.

I know what I am saying.

Деякі дієслова, що виражають відчуття, можуть вживатися у Continuous tenses, часто зі зміною значення, наприклад, to see – у значенні відвідувати, оглядати.

The foreign guests are seeing the sights of Kyiv. – Іноземні гости оглядають визначні пам’ятки Києва.
