Применение способа двойной записи на счетах позволяет отображать и контролировать кругооборот хозяйственных средств во взаимосвязи с источниками их образования. Характерная особенность этого способа состоит в том, что каждая хозяйственная операция вызывает взаимосвязанные и равновеликие в суммовом (стоимостном) выражении изменения, отражаемые по дебету и кредиту счетов. Возникновение способа двойной записи связано с товарным производством и относится к XIV веку. Путем двойной записи на счетах отражали движение капитала и результаты хозяйственной деятельности торговых, а затем и промышленных предприятий.
Метод двойной записи позволяет выяснить, откуда поступили средства, куда они выбыли, какими операциями вызваны изменения в составе средств и их источников, каковы финансовые результаты хозяйственной деятельности.
Двойственное отражение хозяйственной операции заключается в том, что она должна быть записана по дебету одного и кредиту другого счета в одинаковой сумме. При использовании корреспондентских счетов с применением метода двойной записи участвуют три составляющих метода двойной записи - описание хозяйственной операции, дебетуемый счет и кредитуемый счет.
Метод двойной записи имеет большое контрольное значение, поскольку одна и та же хозяйственная операция в равной сумме отражается дважды - по дебету одного и кредиту другого счета. Поэтому в случае расхождения сумм по данной операции выявляется допущенная ошибка и устанавливается ответственность за нее.
