A hotel is an establishment that provides paid lodging on a short-term basis. The provision of basic accommodation, in times past, consisting only of a room with a bed, a cupboard, a small table and a washstand has largely been replaced by rooms with modern facilities, including bathrooms and air conditioning or climate control. Additional common features found in hotel rooms are a telephone, an alarm clock, a television, and Internet connection; snack foods and drinks may be supplied in a mini-bar, and facilities for making hot drinks. Larger hotels may provide a number of additional guest facilities such as a restaurant, a swimming pool or childcare, and have conference and social function services. Hotel rooms are usually numbered (or named in some smaller hotels) for guests to identify their rooms.
The word hotel is derived from the French hotel meaning host), which. Grammatically, hotels usually take the definite article – hence “The Astoria Hotel” or simply “The Astoria”.
Classification
Hotels are also classified by service type ranging for all-inclusive (full-service) resorts that cater to vacationers to small limited service hotels that cater to transient business travelers. The main categories of hotels are as follows:

Hosting a homestay participant also allows the local family to earn some additional, needed income. There are a number of online homestay agencies that connect students with hosts all over the world (usually for a nominal fee).
Hostels provide budget oriented, sociable accommodation where guests can rent a bed, sometimes a bunk bed, in a dormitory and share a bathroom, lounge and sometimes a kitchen. Rooms can be mixed or single-sex, although private rooms may also be available.

A motelis a hotel designed for motorists, and usually has a parking area for motor vehicles. As the United States highway system began to develop in the 1920s, long distance road journeys became more common and the need for inexpensive overnight accommodation close to the main routes led to the growth of motels.
Vacation rental is a term in the travel industry meaning renting out a furnished apartment or house on a temporary basis to tourists as an alternative to a hotel. They are often referred to as self-catering rentals or villa rentals. In some cities, like Barcelona, local authorities consider vacation rentals to be a threat to the hotel industry placing limits on the industry, while in others, such as England, Ireland, France and Spain, the government promotes holiday rentals.
