4. Participle і as independent element (parenthesis). An unrelated p 1 (not related to the subject of the main clause):

  • With certain verbs when the subject of the P1 is felt to be the indefinite pronoun ONE //Judging from recent events, the Government appears to be gaining in popularity=If one judges, if one may judge);

  • In certain stereotyped phrases (participial phrases): generally (properly, roughly, legally, strictly) speaking, putting it mildly, judging by (from), allowing for, taking everything into consideration…

  • When it has the force of a preposition // regarding the question of…= With regard to…

Participle І

The Gerund

They are alike in their verbal characteristics (morphological and syntactical)

  1. It can not be used as subject or object.

  2. As adv. Mod. or attribute it is never preceded by a preposition.

//a `dancing `girl=a girl who dances

  1. As predicative P.1 gives qualitative characteristics to the subject (as an adj.) // The sound of the thunder was deafening.

  2. Participial phrase: Having read the novel Jane put it aside.

The N.A.P.Constr.: The novel having been read, Jane put it aside.

  1. It can be used as subject or object.

  2. As adv. Mod. or attribute it can be preceded by a preposition.

//a `dancing hall=a hall for dancing

  1. As predicative it identifies the subject by revealing its meaning//His hobby is collecting stamps.

  2. On / After reading the novel Jane put it aside.

  3. Only the Gerund is possible when the starting point of the action is meant //He has never been at his native town since leaving it in1999.
