Рецензия на сборник детективных рассказов Артура Конана Дойла «Приключение Шерлока Холмса».

Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle (22 May 1859–7 July 1930) was a Scottish  doctor and author. He is well known because he wrote short stories about the detective Sherlock Holmes. He also wrote science fiction and historical stories.

He became an agnostic by the time he left school. He studied medicine at Edinburgh University in 1876 to 1881. He wrote short stories in his spare time. In 1882, he started working as a doctor in Southsea.

He carried on writing short stories while he waited for patients. His first Sherlock Holmes story that was published was A Study in Scarlet.

Doyle's great gifts as a writer were story-telling and character. He created really memorable characters. Holmes gift for deduction has been copied many times in fiction. The character was probably based on a doctor called Joseph Bell. Holmes himself and Watson were balanced by the evil genius Moriarty, one of the great villains in fiction.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a storybook of twelve stories written by Arthur Conan Doyle, featuring his famous detective, and illustrated by Sidney Paget.

The first story of the storybook is

 К Шерлоку Холмсу и доктору Ватсону приходит рыжеволосый мужчина по имени Джабез Уилсон. Он рассказывает им странную историю, приключившуюся с ним недавно. По его словам, он владеет небольшой ссудной кассой, в котором работает он и его молодой ассистент Винсент Сполдинг. Несколько недель назад, Сполдинг, прочитав объявление в газете о том, что какой-то «Союз рыжих» предлагает лёгкую, но высокооплачиваемую работу исключительно рыжеволосым людям, начал уговаривать своего шефа ответить на объявление. Спустя два месяца, явившись на работу, обнаруживает, что наниматели исчезли в неизвестном направлении. Он просит Холмса разгадать загадку исчезновения щедрых нанимателей.

The redheaded man named Jabez Wilson comes to Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. He tells them a strange story that happened to him recently. According to him, he owns a small pawnbroker office, where he and his young assistant Vincent Spaulding work. A few weeks ago, Spalding, has read an  advertisement in the newspaper that some "Red-Headed League" offers an easy, high-paying job but only for red-headed people and began to persuade his boss to response the  advertisement. Two months later when he came to work, he has revealed that employers have disappeared in an unknown direction. He asks Holmes to unravel the mystery disappearance of generous employers.

Холмс и Ватсон встречаются с молодым ассистентом Винсентом Сполдингом в ссудной кассе и в течение короткой беседы с ним Холмс замечает, что его штаны на уровне колен запачканы. В дальнейшем ходе расследования Холмс приходит к выводу, что злоумышленники планируют ограбить банк, сделав подкоп к нему со стороны ссудной кассы. А вся выдумка насчёт «Союза рыжих» понадобилась им только для того, чтобы иметь доступ к ссудной кассе, которой владел Джабез Уилсон, вынудив его уходить каждый день для работы в загадочном офисе для рыжих. Холмс вызывает полицейского инспектора Джоунса и директора банка. В четвером они устраивают засаду в подземном сейфе банка, в которую попадаются два самых неуловимых преступников.

Holmes and Watson meet a young assistant Vincent Spaulding at pawnbroker office and during a short conversation with him Holmes notes that his pants are stained at the knees. In the further course of the investigation Holmes concludes that the attackers planned to rob a bank by making a tunnel to it from the pawnbroker office. And they only needed all fiction about the "Red-Headed League" to have access to the pawnbroker office, which is owned by Jabez Wilson, stimulation him to go to work every day to the mysterious office for a red-headed. Holmes calls police inspector Jones and director of the bank. At four they ambush in the underground cellar of the bank, in which two of the most elusive criminals get.

The second story of detective Holmes is called «The Adventure of the Speckled Band».

A girl named Helen Stoner asked Sherlock Holmes for help. She lives in the ancient manor Stock-Morton with her step-father, Dr. Grimsby Roylott. With the man who breeds exotic animals and has a mental disorder. Two years ago she lost her sister Julia, who died two weeks before their wedding in mysterious circumstances. On her deathbed, Julia cried: "It was a speckled band!".

Helen decided to ask Holmes for help, thinking that the tragedy may happen again with her as well as with her sister.

The case was solved when Holmes came to the conclusion that step-father had poisoned Helens sister with venomous snake and also wanted to poison Helen herself in order to assign the money left from their dead mother. "When doctor commits a crime, he is the most dangerous of all criminals. He has strong nerves and great knowledge."- So Sherlock Holmes said.

К Шерлоку Холмсу обратилась за помощью девушка по имени Элен Стоунер. Она живёт в старинном поместье Сток-Морон вместе с отчимом, доктором Гримсби Ройлоттом. С человеком который разводит экзотических животных и страдает психическим расстройством. Два года назад девушка потеряла свою сестру Джулию, которая умерла за две недели до своей свадьбы при загадочных обстоятельствах. Будучи при смерти, Джулия крикнула: «Это была пестрая лента!». Элен решила обратиться за помощью к Холмсу, думая что трагедия повториться и с ней так же как и с сестрой. Дело было раскрыто когда Холмс пришел к выводам, что сам отчим отравил сестру Элен ядовитой змеей и хотел так же отравить и саму Элен, что бы деньги которые оставила их покойная мать могли перейти все ему. «Когда врач совершает преступление, он опаснее всех прочих преступников. У него крепкие нервы и большие знания.»- так говорил Шерлок Холмс.

The third story «The Adventure of the Dancing Men» writer included in a storybook of 13 short stories "The Return of Sherlock Holmes"

Очередное дело Шерлока Холмса закручивается вокруг странных пляшущих человечков — с первого взгляда, невинного детского рисунка.

Another case of Sherlock Holmes was twisted around strange dancing men - at first sight, an innocent child's drawing.

Mr. Hilton Cubitt asks Sherlock Holmes for help. A year ago he married Miss Elsie Patrick. A month later, near the house of Mr. Cubitt figures of dancing men began to appear. When Mrs. Cubitt saw them for the first time she lost consciousness.

During the observations and investigations Holmes came to the conclusion that these are pictograms with threats from Elsie Cubitt’s ex-husband, but it was too late. Ex-husband with Hilton shot each other: Cubitt was killed and another man was unharmed. After that Elsie tried to shoot herself. Holmes caught the criminal.

Elsie Patrick has recovered and the ex-husband was sentenced to hard labor.

К Шерлоку Холмсу обращается за помощью мистер Хилтон Кьюбит. Год назад он женился на мисс Илси Патрик. Спустя месяц возле дома мистера Кьюбита стали появляться рисунки пляшущих человечков. Когда миссис Кьюбит увидела их впервые, она потеряла сознание. В ходе наблюдений и расследований Холмс пришел к выводу что это пиктограммы с угрозами от бывшего мужа Илси Кьюбит, но было поздно. Бывший муж  с Хилтоном выстрелили друг в друга: Кьюбит был убит, другой мужчина остался цел. После этого Илси попыталась застрелиться. Приступник был пойман Холмсом.

Илси Патрик выздоровела, а бывший муж был осуждён на каторжные работы.

Наиболее понравившийся для меня рассказ "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle" . Один из считанных рассказов, где Холмс отпускает преступника на свободу.

My favorite story is "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle". One of few stories where Holmes lets criminal go.

Утром 27 декабря Ватсон приезжает к Холмсу, чтоб поздравить его с Рождеством. Холмс поведал ему историю, как к нему попала старая шляпа, и Рождественский гусь. Казалось бы простое, даже смешное дело, но как оказалось потом, было совершено преступление — из отеля «Космополитен» украли драгоценнейший Голубой Карбункул из шкатулки графини. И самое интересное, что преступник спрятал этот камень внутри одного из гусей, которых разводит его сестра, дав проглотить гусю камень. Но потом, забирая гуся себе, он просто перепутал двух одинаковых гусей, взяв не того. Гуси были проданы до Рождества по городу, и теперь преступник ищет того, кому же этот гусь достался. Случайно он выходит на Холмса, у которого и был этот гусь и Холмс узнал всё об этом деле. Однако преступника он отпустил, лишь постыдив его.

In the morning of December 27 Watson comes to Holmes to congratulate him on Christmas. Holmes told him the story of how an old hat and Christmas goose came to him. It might seem simple, even a funny thing, but as it turned out later, the crime was committed - the most precious Blue Carbuncle was stolen from Countess jewelry box from hotel "Cosmopolitan". And the most interesting thing is that the criminal hid the stone in one of the geese that his sister breeds, by giving goose the stone to swallow. But then, taking a goose away, he just mixed up two identical geese, and took the wrong one. Geese were sold before Christmas in the city, and now the criminal is looking for the one who has his goose. Accidently he finds Holmes, who had the goose and Holmes finds out everything about the case. However, he let the criminal go, and had just ashamed him.

Артур Конан Дойл стал одним из моих любимых писателей. Он имел огромный талант написать интересный, захватывающий рассказ всего лишь в 50-60 страниц уместить целую историю: как было совершено преступление, как оно было раскрыто, и не забыть о героях, о характерах. И сделать так, что бы каждая история была интересной и оригинальной. Ведь Шерлок Холмс работает не ради денег, а из любви к своему искусству и не берется за расследование обычных и будничных дел.

Arthur Conan Doyle became one of my favorite writers. He had a great talent to write an interesting, exciting story and fit the whole story on just 50-60 pages: how the crime was committed, how it was disclosed, and do not forget about the characters. And make each story interesting and original. After all, Sherlock Holmes does not work for money, but for love of his art and does not take the investigations of ordinary and everyday affairs.
