Topic 32. Internet and communication.

The Internet is the most important single development in the history of human communication since the invention of call waiting. --Dave Berry

The world will never be the same again with the arrival of the internet. Among numerous things which were substantially changed an outstanding place is occupied by communication. Communication is the most popular use of the Internet, with email topping the list of all the technologies used. Some of the types of communication technologies used also include email discussion groups, blogs, chat groups, and ICQ. These are unique to networked computer environments and have come into wide popularity because of the Internet.

Other technologies, including video and audio conferencing and Internet telephony, are also available on the Internet. The services are given free of charge so people from different continents can freely talk without caring about expensive minutes. Naturally, such a development has spurred world-wide communication. Besides friendly chit-chat, the most popular VoIP application Skype is now widely used for business talks.

Most of the technologies that are unique to the Internet require communication to be done in text-letters with some symbols and punctuation. Communicating effectively involves taking the time, except in informal communications, to use correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation and writing an appropriate message. When replying to a message it is advisable to include the pertinent parts of the message and use an appropriate and interesting subject header in any case.

When you’re communicating on the Internet take special care not to give out personal information to strangers and to treat others with respect. Be aware of the risks involved in communicating with people you cannot see and may never meet in person. Internet fraud happens all the time in chat rooms, email, message boards or on website. Treat all and any proposals with the greatest caution.

Besides that, never trust your interlocutor words about him as many people disguise their true identities under a false one. There were cases of people falling in love and eventually committing suicide when they talked to other people online, assuming them for what they not really were. Take time to consider what you write to others, and be careful to avoid humor and sarcasm except with the best of friends. You can’t assume that your messages are private, so be careful about what you write.

Several issues related to ethical and legal considerations arise from using the Internet for communication. The manner in which communication is implemented on the Internet makes it susceptible to monitoring. You can’t assume that communications are private. Some believe that sending email is like sending a message on a postcard.

Some laws have been enacted to help protect privacy during electronic communications. These, however, have been difficult to enforce and are rarely applied. One way to protect privacy is to encrypt or code a message. A common way of encrypting messages is through the use of public and private keys. Although software for encryption is readily available few people are knowledgeable enough and proficient to use it.

Another area of concern is dealing with abusive or offensive communications. Laws that apply to libel, harassment, and abuse have been applied to cases where the offending behavior has occurred on the Internet. Unsolicited email or other forms of communication is called spam. It definitely is an annoyance. It’s relatively inexpensive to produce, because most of the cost of transporting the email is shifted to the receiver and all people that use the networks supporting the Internet.

One of the most debated issues is the idea that Internet communication may sever all ties people have with the actual world “out there”. Stuck in front of the PC screens, eyes attached to a chat window or some forum website, people might lose real skills and habits, pertaining to socialization in a real, not virtual 3D world. As a result people will detach themselves from the society, from social interaction and might face survival issues as species.

Being linguists we share these fears as we know that linguistic skills are the result of ongoing interpersonal interaction. Thus, we should remember that tool is called tool because it is handled by the master. Internet is a great communications tool for which a man is a master. And not the other way around.
