British Universities

There are more than forty universities in Britain, of which 36 are in England, 8 in Scotland, 2 in Northern Ireland and 1 in Wales. The two oldest universities in England are Oxford and Cambridge. These date from the Middle Ages. Oxford is the oldest of these two universities; it is more philosophical, classical, theological. The history of Oxford began in 1249, that of Cambridge - in 1348. Among the English universities Oxford and Cambridge have a special eminence, and they are different from the others.

England had no other universities, apart from Oxford and Cambridge, until the nineteenth century. The universities which were founded between 1850 and 1930, including London University, are known as Redbrick universities (they were called so because that was the favourable building material of the time). They are in London, Durham, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Sheffield, Bristol, Nottingham, etc. The University of London is the largest of them. The division between Oxford and Redbrick is sharp. The division is essentially a class one. Redbrick universities were built to provide a liberal education for the poorer boys and to give technological training. Oxford and Cambridge graduates scorned them.

The universities which were founded after the Second World War are called "the new universities". They are in Staffordshire, Kent, Essex, Lancaster, Sussex, York. Some of them quickly became popular because of their modem approach to university courses.

All British Universities are private institutions. Every university is independent, autonomous and responsible only to its own governing council. Although they all receive financial support from the state, the Department of Education and Science has no control over their regulations, curriculum, examinations, appointment of staff, or the way they spend money. The number and type of faculties differ from university to university. Each university decides each year how many students it supposes to admit. The admission to universities is by examination or selection (interviews). The students receive grants. They have to pay fees and living costs but every student may receive from the local authority of the place where he lives a personal grant which is enough to pay lodging and food unless his parents are rich. Most students take jobs in the summer for about six weeks, but they do not normally do outside work during the academic session.

Students who pass examinations at the end of three or four years of study get Bachelor's degree. The first postgraduate degree is normally that of Master conferred for a thesis based on at least one year's full-time work. Universities are centres of research and many postgraduates are engaged in research for higher degree, usually Doctorates.

The British government does not think to build more new universities. There is a tendency to expand the older ones. The most interesting innovation is the Open University.

Higher Education in the USA

46

Higher education in America is provided by colleges and universities. The main difference between a college and a university is that the latter is a collection of colleges each of which specializes in a different field.

American colleges and universities are either private or public. There are nearly 1900 institutes of higher learning in America. Roughly one-third are state institutions, 1,200 are private ones. Only about half of the school children graduate from the university in America and receive a university diploma. College is getting more expensive every year. Not all American families can afford university education.

The American universities offer a wide variety of courses. In the same school a student can specialize in economics, chemistry and physics, Latin and humanities, or in automobile mechanics. During the four-year university program, the student studies four or five major subjects per year. In addition the students usually have classes in physical education, music and art. The first two years are a continuation of secondary education; then a student begins an intensive study of his special field. If a student fails a course, he repeats only that course and not the work of the entire year.

Students are classified as freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors. A freshman is a first year student; a sophomore - a second year student; a junior - a third year student and a senior - a fourth year student. All students who have graduated from the senior class and who continue studies at a university are classified as advanced students or graduate students.

At the conclusion of studies a college or university grants a Bachelor's degree. After one or two additional years of studies - a Master's degree. The highest academic degree is the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). It may take a number of years to complete the original research work necessary to obtain this degree.

College prepares the student for two things: either graduate studies, leading to a master's or doctor's degree, or a job immediately after graduation.

The majority of college graduates have to apply to public and private employment agencies to get any job, which is not an easy thing.

Task 1. Answer the questions:

1. How many institutes of higher learning are there in America?

2.Are there private and state colleges in the USA?

3.Is education getting more expensive every year?

4.When does a student begin an intensive study of his special field?

5.The highest academic degree is Ph.D, isn't it?

Text D

Task 1. Read the text and use it as a pattern to describe your working day.

My Working Day

I am a first-year student of the Economical Faculty of the State University. My parents live in Sochi, so I live in a dormitory together with my roommate and best friend Olya.

Now, let me describe my usual working day. My classes begin at 8:30. So on week-days I have to get up at 7:15. I don't have an alarm clock and usually my roommate, Olya wakes me up and my working day begins. I turn on the radio and do my morning exercises while Olya takes a shower. I don't take a bath in the morning because I don't have enough time for it. I take a cool shower (that's when I completely wake up), brush my teeth. After that I go back to our room and get dressed. I brush my hair and put on a light make-up. Then we have breakfast. Olya makes breakfast every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I have to serve breakfast on Tuesdays,

47

Thursdays and Saturdays. I love to listen to the latest news on the radio while I am eating and Olya prefers light music.

We leave the house around eight and walk to the nearest bus-stop. We live rather close to the University and it usually takes us about ten-fifteen minutes to get there by bus. Sometimes when the weather is fine and we have enough time we walk to the University. It is very healthy to walk much.

The classes begin at 8:30 in the morning and they end at 2 p.m. We have lectures in different subjects. As a rule we have 3 or 4 classes a day. Sometimes it is very hard to wait till they end.

Usually I don't miss my classes because I want to pass my exams successfully. But sometimes I do, especially when the weather is fine and the classes are boring.

At 11:50 we have lunch. That's my favourite time. That is the time to share the latest news and to gossip. My friends and I prefer not to go to the canteen and we often have lunch in a small cafe not too far from the University. At 12:30 we have to be back to our classes. During the working day we also have several short breaks that last for ten minutes.

Occasionally I have to stay at the University till 5 or even 6 o'clock in the evening because I go to the library to get ready for my practical classes or to write a report. As a rule I have no free time on week-days. So by the end of the week I get very tired.

We come home at about 7 o'clock in the evening. We eat supper together and share the news. After supper we wash dishes, drink coffee or tea and watch TV. I prefer old comedies and Olya likes soap-operas or films about travelling. Sometimes Olya and I go for a walk in the park or visit our friends.

At about eleven at night I go to bed. I like to read something before going to bed and Olya likes to listen to some music. Sometimes I fall asleep while I am reading and Olya gets up and switches off the light and says - Good night!

Speech Patterns and Dialogues

Task l. Practise the following dialogue in pairs and make similar dialogues discussing your University studies.

Mark Oh, yes, I'll have three weeks' holiday in Wales. I'm going to the Welsh mountains. Jane And then?

Mark Then I'll go to Coventry. Jane Why will you go there?

Mark To study at the University of Warwick. Jane Oh, I'll be very near there.

Mark Where will you be?

Jane I'll be at Birmingham University. What are you going to study?

Mark Economics. I hope to work for an advertising agency one day. And what about you? Will it be your first year?

Jane Yes. I'm doing modern languages. I don't know what I want to be. I think I'd like to be a teacher.

48

Mark Do you know what you'll teach?

Jane I'm not really sure ... perhaps I'll teach Spanish.

Murk Do you speak Spanish?
